From a runner to all cyclists:

Please get a bell.. They cost and weigh virtually nothing.

It will benefit everyone, including cyclists. When bikes approach hikers, & runners & dog walkers from behind on a shared path, a simple 'ping, ping' would alert us to your presence. We can then move over & you can zoom on by without even slowing down.

How easy is that? What do you think?

Should be mandatory.

Have a bell, it does F-ALL when the runners have earphones in! Same goes for other cyclists

Good idea and It works most of the time, unless the "pedistrians" cannot hear you i.e. listening to music etc

Also if you stop peddaling and free wheel the zzzzzzzzz noise that rear wheel makes also works as a good warning method (on road bikes which people dont like to put bells on for some reason...)

I have a bell...

Runners, please take your earphones out while running. 90% of all runners i come across run with it in their ears... They are totaly oblivious to anything happen around them

i run with earphones in..but I am totally aware of my surroundings...the only time I may not be is if a faster runner comes up behind me...but then they have passed me anyway...Bikes dont sneak up from behind because they are on the the other side of the road, and If I happend to have my head down when someone is coming towards me...I run so close to the gutter that it will make absolutely no difference....and finally I dont have my music loud

Which area are you referring to? Where are you having a problem?

I assume by mentioning hikers, dogs, etc. the OP is referring to singletrack or jeeptrack.

If you trail run or MTB with earphones in, i'm afraid we cannot be friends (Road riding too) ill let road running slide (purely because its so damn boring) I go into the mountains to get away from the noise.

I went riding with a mate in the alps last year, and all the trail riders have bells on their bikes. Its common courtesy over there, and the other trail users step aside and greet with a smile. Completely stress free.

I encounter lots of runners , pedestrians on my MTB route around Pretoria . For some reason runners and walkers find the the pavemunt is also the safest place to be . Most of them walk with earphones plugged into phones so the bell I had did not really get their attention . Got another bell recently with a higher pitch and it seems to work a lot better . Also make sure the bell you get does not make a moewiese racket when you hit the bumpy downhills cause that is just irritating .

Trying get an idea of the circumstances, blind corners on singletrack or jeeptrack
