Overtaking - Skill levels, busy parks and manicured single track

You let the rider in front of you know you are there and politely ask them to move over when they have a chance to do so. I never really pass anyone but if someone says that to me I will make a plan asap to move over for them

Hogwash. You shout Strava, and force your way through making them eat your dust. They are all lesser forms of life, and should be treated as such.

But is there some kind of word or phrase that is widely used?

Like say when you slice a ball playing golf you shout FORE to warn people a ball is about to enter into their general vicinity

Interesting....the trail rules for the Karkloof MTB basically say that however you interpret the rule on passing, the onus is on you to ensure your moves are made safely and politely for both parties, irrespective how the other party acts. That is just good sense and leaves no wriggle room.

I must admit that my first few weeks of Strava have reduced my patience on the trail...time to refocus on the bigger picture maybe.....

Well there's "track", but that sounds rude to me, I'll politely tell people "I'm behind you and will over take when I get a chance", then tell them over taking right or left when I do. AND THANK THEM WHEN I'VE PASSED.

Excuse the caps abuse, but manners matter!!!

Before just about every race I have taken part in, the race briefer/commisair says that if you want to pass a slower rider in front of you, you should call out "trek please" and then wait till they have a safe place to pull over. And I always thank them afterwards.

In the 18 odd months I've been hogging some single track, I've come across two arses... Everyone else simply says they wish to pass - when I can move over I do, many say don't worry, keep going, some offer encouragement.

At times I've gotten a fright as I seem to forget there's other ppl around when suddenly someone starts talking to me - but all good.

Thank goodness most MTBers are friendly types.

The funniest thing is.... No matter how much faster I get in single track, I will never forget starting out and being the slow guy holding people back. I hated the feeling of being hunted down, and felt guilty about spoiling their ride. So unless you're born awesome on the trails, you were that person. It's like being a K Nob to yourself.

Yeah, I always remember that as well.

However, whenever I come up to someone slower than me (and that's not often) then I just chill. Have a look at their lines, watch them go and try to go a bit faster (it always happens - they try to stay in front, and speed up - as ifthey were on the freeway and you're tailgating)  and just watch them. If they mis-step, I just let them know. But most of the time I just cheer them on and help them go a bit faster. I'm still learning, and I was once that person in front of me, wanting more information on how to get better...

FOKKKOFFFF

Ps.

Thanks to Dr V12 for pointing me to this thread. Not only am I in awe of the OP's riding ability but I am completely intimidated by his intellect.

How did we cope without him?

Posted

The only thing I am certain of regarding the OP is that he (assuming he is married or in a relationship) has not met his significant other on the trails.  I don't see the ladies queuing up for a date with this chivalrous specimen.

Remind me again, how defending an elder lady's right to ride makes us lower grade?

I feel quite the opposite, I'd just like to thank all of you for being the other type of guy on the singletrack! I've read this thread to my mom and whilst we laugh and joke, she has seriously asked me where she CAN actually ride now. She feels she is not welcome on the trails and would rather stick to road, where she's never been belittled.

So again, thanks for the support for her... Unfortunately, in a sea of positivity, it only takes one wave to knock you flat.

You tell your mom that we say she can ride wherever the hell she wants.

And dont let anybody tell her otherwise.

Whats the saying about one guy on this thread is a knob and i dont like broth? (Or something like that)

I'm with Wayne, she should and can ride wherever she likes! If anything he may find that he wonders where he can go ride without being considered a total tjop ......

One day I will be that 'sextagerian' (sounds like some kind of deviant :o ) and I'd hate to think that I won't be able to go ride where I want because of some arrogant idiot.

According to the OP they should not be riding there.

And then I see this in other news .

I do a yoga and power yoga , with resistance bands as well, as training regime. As a naturally aggressive and technically capable rider, getting to that point required numerous falls, some serious, some not so. But I agree, getting your core and upper body strength in line with your riding fitness, prevents  not only a lot of injury, but a lot of falls.

It depends on where you want to be, if you want to ride edgy technical stuff at blistering speeds where the brain isn't thinking anymore, falling, how to fall and how to recover from the serious falls, is all a part of the game

OP, you are really awesome, a demigod on two wheels .

This I dedicate to you, even though your posture in your profile pic is all wrong.

I had an after thought as well .

I wonder how many people actually have the ability to ride at the level they speak of ?

Often I just sit back and think that in their mind the lunch box has just received a new legend.

It's Friday, bring it on .

We'll need to follow the lead of the Australians on this one. "Anyone wanting to ride Thaba but scared of being barged off the trail by a skills genius? #IllRideWithYou"
