Come on guys! Jeez, can't you give the crew half a break? There's a fire that is STILL burning as we sit here debating this and they've taken the call to at least offer people that have travelled here the opportunity to all ride together and share the spirit of thousands and thousands of riders in the safety of riding on a closed National Highway as an extended coffee ride.

Most of you didn't even see an opportunity for the ride to happen in any way! Give those that want to ride the chance to enjoy all the services that come with the event even if it's less than half the normal route distance!

It must suck for the international riders but remember that they manage the insurance for the riders, if 10 000 or the 35 000 pick up respiratory issues during race that will be way too much to cover. Also all along the mountains there are dangers or Rock falls etc.

Going out to the Northern Burbs maybe an option but not at this short notice.

No, there is lots they could do. This is a cop out, a very big cop out.

As Blackbeard said on another thread - there should have been a plan route C, D and E.

Not just a peninsula ride.

This is a slap in the face to the many riders from overseas and up country.

Instead of cancelling they are trying to "save face" and do a "something is better than nothing" with a positive spin on "lets do it for cape town ride"

This is bull TWANG ! What about the other fires in the overberg. No man I hate to use the words but this is bordering on cowardly and again - no planning.

Hell they could have sent us for a 50km ride down the n7 and back. or the N2 frikken heck.

No wonder people think us cyclists are a bunch of rude, ungrateful jerks (used as a placeholder)..

I don't know you Slowbee and have no axe to grind against you, but I find your posts so far on this matter so far, beyond belief.

Can I like this 100 X?

This is a once in a lifetime thing, suddenly I am all excited again for the Argus! The SS is coming out!

Although it is my moms 25th tour this year, she is p@#%ed

Edit: okay maybe I am just excited because my training is non-existant and this seems like an easy cop out. For those who trained, like my 62 year old mom, I am sorry for you.

What an arrogant, intolerant response.

Do you really believe that they have not done everything possible to make this as much of an experience as possible.

This being our first CTCT, and coming from Jozi, we are hugely disappointed but having followed what has been happening with the fire, the commitment of the those fighting, the incredible spirit of Cape Tonians in supporting the firefighters, the decision is unfortunate but understandable.

Maybe the safety of the riders and the ability of the firefighters to do their jobs to save the rest of the mountain actually trump your personal indignation.

Arrogant ? Intolerant ? Please explain why you see those in my comments Davem?

More a case of I expected more of the cycle tour trust ?

Wow, Slowbee, this is the most angry I have ever seen you! :)

I have been thinking a few days it would have to be cancelled (or at least shortened very significantly). I would love a gentle meander up the R27 like the West coast Express, and back down the N7 maybe, but every option involves a National Road, and that will just never happen.

Just came from a cycling meeting.  So I was not far off.  There was just no way that they could have ventured into Muizenberg and onwards.  Maybe the organisers can sweeten the deal by giving us a discount on next year's  entry fee, or give all of us first option for an entry.

It is disappointing but it is understandable and at least we do get to ride and experience the vibe.

I'm amazed at the negative comments. I'm clearly disappointed, but to blame anyone, except possibly the person who started the fire, is irrational.

Whoever thinks that this is cop-out by PPA is clearly ignorant to the logistical issues associated with Cycle Tour, this is not a simple group ride.

I'll ride on Sunday to show my support to the brave guys who've been battling the fires in atrocious conditions over the past couple of days.

There is 3 of us, driving down as I type. We are 200 km from home, 1500 from Cape Town. Turning back didn't even cross our minds. We won't miss this for nothing. I think it's gonna be awesome.

Edit: got the kilo's wrong

daveM, my comments are beyond belief, simply because I expected so much more of the cycle trust, and just feel totally let down. I expected them to show what a world class organisation they are. Perhaps I am disapointed because I never expected them to shorten the route as some form of  a compromise and then try sell it as a solidarity ride.

*as an aside, and not discounting multiple personalities, if I was also reading my posts without being in my head, I would say the same things as you to me*
