Actually this thread reminds me why I never do road events: crowds of people, traffic, litter, water tables and tar...

Bring on some mountain running this weekend, leave nothing but a foot print, take nothing but photos. Water will be on my back, water stations are rivers as and when come across them and a quick dip to cool down if needed and not dealing with people.

Personally, I feel that a lot of this has to do with the attitude of runners in road running events.  I often come across people that would rather throw the empty sachet in the storm water drain or the veld, than on the road or in the provided bins.

These are often also the runners that insist on starting as far forward as possible, even if it means pushing in from the front; yet they walk wihin the first 3km, or put up a huge fight when stopped for traffic, etc.

If I use sachets, I will trown them in the bins, if I miss a bin, I will pick the sachet up.

On our running vests we have our annual licenses sew onto them. I have left the top of my license open so when i am finished with a water sachet or GU i put the empty packet in there and discard it when i get to the next bin.

Our vests too have little pockets actually made into the sides. Not so lekker for heavier things (full gu's, keys etc) but perfect for empty packets

Yip, the considerations of eg to do 'voluntarily seeding' at the start, looking out before changing direction, show / indicate with your arm & hand that you are going to stop (sometimes even counting down on your fingers), when walking do so out of the way as far as possible, do not run 3+ abreast without leaving a space in between, only take the minimum at water tables seems long forgotten :(

My hand is just as good to carry empty Gu packets or water sachets to the next water point and be able to drop in a garbie

I did that at Arthur Cresswell but kept forgetting to empty it at each water station. I arrived at the finish looking like I was at the end of the third trimester.

I've got a Two Oceans Ultra entry available - well me and the rest of the planet it seems

But if anyone wants the entry, you can have it - all it will cost you is the admin fee of R175.

I will refund you the rest of the entry fee when the webtickets guys refund me...

Would way rather someone got some use out of my entry over it just going to waste.

If you've never done the race before, it's honestly about as good as road running gets - seriously bummed to be missing out, but I have at least secured a *** expensive trail run entry to give myself some solace :)

I got a sub yesterday, but was still trying to convince myself. Not sure if I really want to drive the 2000k, seeing that all flights are booked. But this helps.. ????

Thanks to our well-paid friends I got a 4 hour window to run in yesterday. I'm home-alone for a few days so it was a pretty good reason to grab my pack and head out.

One thing I noticed, while the suburbs are eerily quiet during load-shedding, every 5 houses or so there is the thrashing of nut and bolts with generators whirring outside in the garden. Especially running down the spruit, you kind of catch it echoing from both sides.

I see Two Oceans opened up a Relay style Ultra option, since very second person wants to substitute their ultra for a 21km entry

Wow, what a cool idea. Makes you wonder why no one has thought of it before. I wonder how runner 1 is going to get back to civilization as I assume there will be road closures.
