Anybody got some good lower body workout plans for gym?

Decided I'm going to do a session of strengthening one day a week in the gym. That coupled with a weekly pilates class I am hoping is going to make me a bit more bullet proof when it comes to my running injuries...

Yoga?

Aagh Barry, so sorry to hear that! It really sucks if things does not go as planned after all the hard work. I agree with all previous comments, this was something out of your control.

Hope you feel better soon!! 2020 will be your year for revenge.

Thanks for the encouragement, all. It helps getting perspective from others.

You made the right decision, If I had done the same a month back I wouldn't have ended up with pneumonia...

Well done to everyone who ran Comrades! To all those that finished very well done and to those who might not have finished we'll see you at the next one.

I enjoyed the day out and was chuffed with my result. I was hoping to, and had planned on running for a silver. Started out in A batch so crossed the line a matter of a few seconds. Very soon there were B, C, D batch runners flying past. I guess most of them faded into nothing further down the road? Stuck to my required pace nicely and felt comfortable and was slightly ahead through my first few splits. Went through half way spot on and carried on. It was from about 55-60ks that I started slowing and found I was battling to run the required pace per km to be in with a shot at that silver.

For nutrition I had arranged for a few spots to collect Maurten drink mix and Maurten gels and a few rice cakes I had made (as used by cycling teams), so the nutrition worked out well. Only had water from tables and a few cokes at the last few tables.

It was probably from 25ks out where a combination of my mind and body decided that silver wasn't likely. It then became a matter of soldiering on as best as possible and keep moving forward and hopefully get below 8hrs. The legs were very tired at this stage. Decided that I would do my utmost to run the entire Pollys which I did, although it was more of a shuffle and wasn't much faster than those walking Those last few Kms were seriously tough. When the silver gun went off I was just short of 3 kms from the finish.

Running into finish area was special. Saw my folks at the start of the dirt road. Was caught on tv blowing a snot bomb and was on tv for the whole dirt stretch, through the tunnel and onto the finish straight.

Running that uneven green mat was interesting and being on the finish straight with only a few runners around was lekker.

At the end of the day I finished my third Comrades and did 7h44. It was a 44 minute improvement from last year and a big 2h54 improvement from my first up run where I was reduced to walking for the last 20 or so ks due to a sore groin. Really enjoyed actually running the finish this year

With some work I think I can nail the silver so that'll be the goal for next year.

Well done b-rad, 44min improvement over your "down" time is massive let alone the 2:54 from your previous "up". I'm sure you will nail the silver next year.

I came across a video on social media of Gerda pulling empty water sachets out of her top to throw them in a Garbie bin on Sunday when on her way to break the record. This is truly inspiring and i have huge respect for her for doing this. What a role model for the youngsters. These are the type of people that we need more of in the limelight instead of the corrupt politicians.

Well done to all who took part in this years comrades. Just getting to the start line is an achievement in itself.

This was my second comrades and my first up run, back to back medal was on offer. Last year I had set a goal of sub 11 and came up short with a 11h39, so was pretty disappointed. This year I decided I wasn't going to set to high a goal and just go out for a finish, I would see how I feel as they day went on and run accordingly.

The most common peice of advice I got through out the year was to take the first half easy as it would be the toughest Marathon I've ever done, so I set out with that exact plan and managed to get to Drummond in 05h30 still feeling okay. In that time I still hadn't seen my wife and family on the route not once as they had been stuck in traffic. Had managed to borrow a phone from a club mate and spoke to her so I knew their situation. I didn't let it get to me and managed on the water, energade and bananas at the water tables.

I knew there were still some nasty climbs coming so stuck to a strategy of running the downs, flats and shuffling walking up the hills. It worked as I got to the top of Pollys still feeling okay and saw that I had about 49min to do the last 7km to squeeze in a sub 11. Ran the whole way with no walking and came in with a 10h53. I couldn't believe it was possible to do a negative split in comrades, but I had done it.

The up run definitely doesn't hurt as much as the down, wasn't nearly half as sore as I was last year the day after.

Now I wait and see for next year.....
