BarHugger Posted May 16, 2016 Share Let's stay calm.....let's not panic.....no negative comments......no need for smoothies.....no need for points......in actual fact it really has nothing to do with the points......it's actually all about a corporate taking your money and ripping you off along the way......just stay calm please....when the time comes for that big operation you will be liable for 70 % of the theatre bill and 50 % of the hospital bill.....don't panic.....Discovery is a medical aid messiah...... Wannabe Posted May 16, 2016 Share Slightly off topic, but this big corporation cost me R5873.20 for a Hospital claim (MRI scan) they rejected. Heard it this morning. Slightly, just slightly, peeved off right now.

Investigative scans aren't covered unless they form part of an admission for a procedure.

It has to be part of a procedure ie: We know you have cancer, we're booking you in for it but we want to get an extent of the disease.  Or if you're in a car crash and admitted for that, and go for a scan. If you're admitted JUST for a scan, no dice.  Momentum are the only ones who have cover for purely investigative scans on their basic hospital plans without MSA. ALL other med aids will not cover investigative MRI / CT / XRAY scans unless you have day-to-day cover, and even then there will be a co-payment.

I had already visited the Emergency room earlier in the year, so my savings were kaput. And couldn't stay overnight as my OH was in Jhb. That would have been the same regardless of whether you were admitted or not, as it was a purely investigative scan.
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted May 16, 2016 Share Sounds like a nice little clause and easy cop out by them......what if your GP sends you to a specialist and they admit you ?If it's investigative, and you're on a plan without savings, then you pay the cost of it. If they admit you, they pay the cost of the admission (bed and breakfast) but the scan is still for your account unless you have day-to-day benefits. There will still be a co-payment though, and if you have available MSA it will come from there. if you don't have any MSA, then it comes from your pocket.  Standard operating procedure for all medical aids except Momentum, who has coverage for investigative scans on all but their lowest echelon plans (the ones with salary bands)  Profmed, Fedhealth, Bonitas, Discovery etc. All have that distinction - which is why I recommend a plan with savings unless clients have the cash available to pay for those MRI scans themselves... Edited May 16, 2016 by Myles Mayhew
