My father in law was given a few planks of Imbuia from a golfing mate. The smell when you are turning it is absolutely amazing, I still think its the best smelling wood and it sands to a glass like finish.

used to love the smell of Imbuia when we worked with it at school. Our woodwork models where always Imbuia and Parmafin (excuse that spelling - I have no idea)

Hout mense!

My kids want a bunk bed, I want some new tools.

What is the view on those pocket hole jigs? They look pretty nifty! Looking at the Kreg one, thoughts?

Also looking at a small router to make the edges lekker. - Saw a "mini bosch blue one" any thoughts?

I already have a circular saw and some chizzles and plane.

Was thinking building a bunk bed may be rad, will pop into my wood place to check out some pine prices.

my youngest has also been asking for a bunk bed, she just wants a bed high up off the floor.

She already has a wooden bed, so was thinking of adding some "stilts" and a ladder

I thought pocket holes were a gimmick until I bought the small Kreg jig ~R500 odd.

Flip its crazy how strong those joints are compared to just screwing two pieces together. I use pocket holes for all drawers/boxes etc now and they work a charm.

The Bosch blue trim router is one of my favorite tools, little workhorse that thing and I will reach for it 9 out of 10 times before pulling out the big router. I didnt know I needed one until I had it but its a little champ.

Check out the pics Myles put up recently of his bunk style bed, its a great use of space.

Pau Marfin - yellowwood substitute which worked really nicely.

PS: I had to google the spelling, I also always thought "parmafin" was the right spelling.

You sir have made my day! I will pop to the tool shop this weekend and have a look. I see there is the small R500 odd jig or a 1000 bucks set vibe, any real difference?

I seriously dislike working yellowwood! its too prone to tearout and hardly any better than pine!!

Admittedly its always been trees that have been cut down and not commercially bought wood, Im not sure how much effect that would have though.

How good is your woodworking skills?

Because if you are still wet around the ears like myself, I would suggest not building the beds themselves from scratch, but to take two pine beds (they probably already have one of these each,) and convert them into a bunk bed by putting one on stilts in a config that suits your rooms. And for this I would use stronger joints and proper bolts. But I would defer to the council of the lumberjack in this regard.

Sidenote:

My brother had a lot of time in one of his varsity holidays, and decided to build metal stilts for his koshuis bed so that they had more room for activities.

Being a know-it-all med student he welded it up himself, and did a pretty good job. Well that is what he thought until my father returned and realised that all the welds were just tacked together in place and he didn't run a single full bead. Needless to say my dad finished the job before taking him back to res.

The laaitie has since become a pretty decent doctor, but I still don't trust his diy skills. Ironically, he now drives a Land Rover.

Just be aware that you have to use specific srews - the jig itself may not be that expensive but oh my the screws are another story. AND you need an assortment of screws. I use loose tenons to build beds but you need some tools for that.
