Paul Moeller & Co and ITM used to have stock. But most ply grades were BB/BB and lower ircc.

yeah. That serves my purposes for PARTS of what I want to make, but I'd really like some better grades to do the outer bits. Love the symmetry that can come from a well assembled ply object. But for it to work nicely, it needs to be good quality.

Myles, if you want top grade birchply (grade B/BB). ITM will source it for you, but you need to order a whole container full. They dont normally hold stock of that level of quality, only BB/BB or lower. I find the BB/BB quality damn good. Just needs smart cutting to avoid the patches

If you find the BB/BB good, that's good enough for me...

Just discovered this thread, and thought I'd share something.

Made these speakers ~5 years ago:

Made from solid maple

I've also made most of my furniture, but those photos I've deleted from my account, as I noted there are people who started copying my designs.

Excellent copy of the Sonus Faber Cremonas there.  Those ScanSpeak drivers must have cost you a pretty penny. I am still thinking of building my own some day. I did a quote to get some of the Revelator and/or Illuminator drivers from Madisound, and got a sticker shock.

Thanks,

yeah although a copy, it was more an inspiration build, or trial build for another project/design I had in mind. More complex etc. Even though I planned this build in great detail, it was still unknown whether it would be a success.

With our exchange rate, it's become just too expensive to even try and improve on this. I was thinking of a MTMWW Accuton mids/Audio Technology woofers, 91+dB design with curved (in 2 directions) walnut sides, mixed with composites (like Vivids almost).

Question - where to get A/B ply in CT, 21mm or 18mm? And what cost per sheet?

It's great for the application [emoji12], this specific board is hard, and the finish is chosen so the crates don't slide off the truck. Different boards for different applications. We sell a lot of ply, but very little for furniture grade application. If the customer requires a better quality than our standard, we buy it out.

also try boland timber merchants ... they are right next to each other.

ITM timbers may also get you some bits and bobs, but they specialise in more bespoke (aka frek expensive) wood. They the type of place you select your planks from as they are fresh from the tree (still have bark on) and then they trim to size for you.

ITM is not that expensive.  Bought 2 German Beech planks (260mm X 48mm X 2500mm) from them for R1500.  They are rough sawn, but so flat that I will probably only need to smooth plane them. One thing I like about ITM is that they know how to stack their lumber. And one of the sales ladies knows me (her daughter and mine were best friends at day school), so I always get a bit of discount.

My latest hack - all I discoverd yesterday is that hardboard absorbs spray undercoat like a sponge - so ran out of paint...

The other learning point is that 32mm hardboard get HEAVY for big pieces

Looks better on the photo than it actually is, but a long way to go.
