Frankly I don't give a dam, yeah really!

Don't watch rugby, have killer fun at most events, have cycled over 14000km this year so, err what's the problem?

So u just found out the world doesn't revolve around u and cycling.

This is a really cry me a river post.

I am also one of those fortunate ones that has an understanding wife. Most of my mates don't cycle so braai conversations very rarely are about cycling. At my age I don't care what people think when I go to bed at 9:30 and don't partake of alcoholic beverages.

Just as an aside keep in mind that being fit and healthy is no guarantee of a long life. I am often astounding by how many people who by all accounts should have major health issues due to their lifestyles manage to carry on quite happily into a ripe old age. It not only astounds but even makes me mad at times ????

Often friends and family have asked my wife how she puts up with the amount of riding I do and her standard answer is 'it's what he does'..... Followed by 'keeps him happy and sane with all the stress from work AND family and I'd rather have that than him drowning his sorrows at a pub a few times a week. No she doesn't know that would be a lot cheaper ????

I was lucky enough that Wendy decided she wanted to spend time with me enough to get into cycling :-)

Now she loves it and she gets grumpy when she doesn't get to ride ;-)

Interesting, since moving to Ireland, I have had to temper my obsession a lot due to many factors, but having to clean, cook, wash, mow the lawn etc doesn't help with time. Not complaining at all, just been a fact for me. Add to that my son playing a lot of rugby and buying a pony for my daughter (no cheap labour so mucking out, feeding etc a daily task) and time with the family, and there is not a lot left, especially at this time of year, when it is dark by 4pm.

However, I am extremely fortunate that my wife encourages me to ride more and really supports the need I have to spend time on the bike. In fact this morning, we discussed a possible promotion at work and her advice was to stay put as it would mean less time and therefore less opportunity for prioritising cycling at some stage in the week

Maybe my signature is relevant to this topic

It is a Koan , by the late Leonard Cohen (the only one I could find by him - I  thought that given his years in a Buddhist  monastery there would be more.)

"Only one thing made him happy,
And now that it was gone
Everything made him happy."

If you have less time to yourself then its not a promotion.

But balancing work, family and hobbies is a fine art. I practically gave up cycling when the babies started to pop out. I just didnt have the time to get enough time in the saddle to be competitive in anyway. At the moment I take my running quite serious, its much easier to work in a few quality runs during the week.

I think most of us have been admonished by the other half because of cycling and related activities.

Mine moans when I am still in bed at 6h30 when I promised her we would get up early and go cycling. Or to hurry up so she does not have to wait for me at the top of the hill. :whistling:

Start a fight with her

Before we got married we went to an "engagement encounter" counselling program. They told us there that after the wedding we can fight as often as we like - just one rule - both parties must be completely naked.  . That was nearly 25 years ago, now days we cycle together more often than we fight.

my previous obsessions... which involve fast cars and unpowerd human flight

I also have an obsession with unpowered flight. I started that before we met. The trick was to balance it, with something like cycling. :D

Cyclists are obsessed

They'll sell one or their kidneys to get that new upgrade

Even talk, yap and dream about that bike, that route, that new 2000-and-something something

Keep perspective

Ride for the love of it

But keep a mental log of time spent in the bubble of cycling and time spent with loved ones and other priorities.

Very interesting topic and very true.......I too am a lucky fella....no nagging from wifey about cycling.....or my precious Swift Attack......How do I do it?????  I started an old hobby of mine .......breeding racing pigeons.......Now that is something wifey cannot handle.......Now she actually encourages me to spend more time on my bike in the hope that I would not have time for my pigeons..........Just my 10cents worth......... lol
