So, City of Cape Town wants to be recognized as a cycling super city in the ilk of Euro style commuting etc.

My 2 cents contribution is that in order for this to become a reality, stricter law enforcement on the existing cycle routes need to be enforced. By example, Paarden Island - Town via N1 underpass. Too much poo happening there. Now Durbanville has become a bike-jack hotspot.

The CoCT has the right idea, but it seems their focus is a bit off.

Need to find a way to divert the wind too.

But Cape Town certainly lends itself to increasing the number of trips undertaken on bicycles. We really need a cycle super highway from Somerset West to CBD.

Cops and security have been a regular visible presence on the cycle lane from Paarden Eiland to the exit these past weeks. Including weekends.

Unfortunately the fence has been bent right back at the base of the railway bridge (northern side).

A colleague reported it today.

Numbers to call for vandalism, crime etc.

METRORAIL CRIME STOP    0800 21 00 81 (all hours) Toll Free
SAPS CRIME STOP               0860 01 01 11
SAPS [Cape Town Station]     021 449 5111
CORPORATE SECURITY     Cape Town     021 449 4336 (all hours)

You got one already... :whistling:

SWest - Stellies - Bottelary - DVille - Tiekiedraai - R27 - CBD ...and back

This is a great initiative. Hope that the Velodrome can piggyback on this initiative and get some good coverage so that it's existence isn't constantly threatened. It's all part of the greater cycling culture too...

"Currently cyclists have access to at least 450 km of cycle lanes across the city, some of which as mentioned above are separate from the road."

Any cycle lanes that are not separate from the road are currently useless. Which is the majority of them.

We're a long way from being cycle friendly, let alone a super cycling city. I feel safer lane splitting traffic on the N1 than I do on our bike paths.

Ja, I can see people living in Khayelitsha taking a detour via DVille, wherever the farck that is, or going via Stellies. Can't you type in English without gansta illiterate slang?

But pray tell, with a google map, where this cycle super highway is? That's the problem with inviting comment and not engaging but instead posting smart arse replies with childish, mocking faces.

I have yet to go to Somerset West in any form of transport via R27, Tiekiedraai, DVille, Bottelary and Stellenbosch. No wonder blue collar commuters don't think of bicycles as a feasible method of transport.

better design of cyclepaths/lanes required.

So many of them are bad, I just hope they are learning and improve.

I must say, even going up Constania Nek the drivers are not that bad, even the taxi's give plenty of space.

The best way to increase bike safety is to ban the importing of FIAT's and any colour car that is not white, black, grey, blue or red. I have only had issues with these cars :P

yoh that's a bit uncalled for. His comment was clearly tongue in cheek

Cpt has the bellville velodrome.  Steep, fast and indoor.  Train summer, winter, wind snow.....whatever

Having a place to cycle indoors doesn't make CT a bicycle friendly city
