Asking for a friend  :whistling: , if he were wanting to have his midlife change and buy himself and offroad 4 stroke dirt bike to play around with now and again when visiting his mates farm in the Overberg - where would one start looking - dealer or private ?

So far Gumtree is pretty empty as I he was told that  2 stroke is apparently needing a motor rebuild every so often and that he should look at Yamaha 4 stroke as a good make.

He has Never really ridden bikes with a motor other than the odd farm dirt road.

Yamaha WR450, for me the best bet.

What is this "midlife" you speak of?

Be patient and Keep an eye on gumtree. Much like DH bikes 2nd hand moto's have almost zero 2nd hand value so you can throw out a VERY cheeky offer.

If you're new to it a 4 stroke 250 or something with a wide ratio gearbox like a WR450 like the nerd suggested will be easiest to manage. I had a YZ250F and that was more than enough bike for me. There aren't any crap bikes so most of the advice you will get is down to personal preference. Don't be put off by ex race bikes. They might have been ridden hard but they will have been well maintained.

Some things to note.

1. You are not the next Eli Tomac.

2. They are quite a lot of work

3. The entire planet hates you when you have one.

4. The actual riding is only 20% of the experience. See point 2

5. Get proper gear. A pair of decent boots is a lot cheaper than ankle reconstruction.

6. It's very time consuming. See point 2. But when you crack open the throttle on a bright sunny day just after the rain it's pretty special.

Have a look at the Wilddogs adventure bike forum but; be warned; it is addictive.

I dont think so though, the WR's ive ridden are relatively tame.

Sure there is vooma there when you need it but it beats having to buy twice...

Oh dear [emoji848]

Yeah you can't just chuck your bike over the tailgate and helmet in the back seat and go riding. But don't let that stop you. They are great fun.

If you are a complete newby get a 4 stroke 250. They have more than enough power to get you scared but aren't out to kill you. A 450 is a LOT of bike. A 2 stroke 125 is for someone who has ZERO mechanical sympathy. Especially here in the sand. A 2 stroke 250 is.... Um.....Exiting!

You should be able to get a very decent 250F for 20k. Throw in another 10 for good helmet, boots etc and you're good to go.

One other thing. if you do get one get a jetwasher. The sand down here is very salty and you'll need to at least jet wash the bike IMMEDIATELY after you ride. Otherwise the metalic bits (most) of the bike will start to corrode before you are out of the shower.

Oh and NONE of your MTB skill will translate across to the moto.

I'm ex-Yamaha so can give a bit of insight.  I think as a first bike, unless you are 120kg, a WR450 is a bit much hey - they are pretty wild and and also quite heavy.  What you probably want to try and find is a WR250 - plenty power for a beginner and also nice and light.  As for the 2-strokes - KTM makes some pretty decent bikes but I don't know them that well so I can't comment but I hear the 300 is very good - on the Yamaha side if you want to go 2-stroke you need to look for a YZ250, (and this is the important part) but one that has the Enduro conversion - so a WR gearbox and a weighted flywheel. This turns them from a wild MX bike to a less wild Enduro bike.  Generally speaking a well maintained 4-stroke will be fine, but they do need a bit more attention than the 2 strokes - and when they do go bang, it's expensive - like 30k expensive if bits of the piston drop into the gearbox.  A YZ250 you can rebuild for around 15k - maybe even less.  You're in Cape Town - I reckon wander off to Helderberg Yamaha and chat to Gavin - he'll give good advice - he'll probably try and sell you a new bike, but rather go for a decent used one - there are lots out there.
