I currently use a Polar RS800CX on my Mountain bike , but are looking to upgrade to the Garmin products.Mainly due to new tech and also more functions. Would like to still use Garmin as a watch thus looking into the Garmin Fenix range .Am I on the right track ?

Went from Polar RS800 to Fenix 3

Have not looked back since.

Better software.  Better reports and info.  Faster on GPS.  Better integration into 3rd party apps and webpages.  ANT+ compatible.

The list goes on.

Garmin all the way. Used to be on Polar then got a Fenix 3 - much better in every way IMO. Have since then gotten a Edge 520 as well. Won't consider anything else in future.

Better battery life, awesome user interface, seamless integration with 3 party apps, ant+ and bluetooth compatible, best mapping and routing on the market, and often overlooked but very important if you are going to be wearing it every day - the Fenix range of watches are dam good looking!

Started HR tracking with Polar, was a fan for a long time.

Then tried Garmin, Fenix 3, have never looked back.

Go Garmin

Choose your budget, then pick the Garmin that fits in that budget, you won't regret it.

I've gone from garmin to polar. But at the bottom end of the spectrum. Went from a Garmin forerunner 15 to a polarm400. In this equation the Polar is a far better watch, but it's also newer.

I use both ....

Polar for the commute bike.

Garmin on the trail bike.

Garmin is MUCH quicker to lock onto satelites !  Often commute a few kilometers before the Polar locks onto satelites ....

I much prefer the Polar web interface.  For Garmin the Phone interface is better than the web interface, but still not as nice the Polar web.  (possibly because I started with Polar and got used to the layout)

If I had to buy today - GARMIN !!

I'm a Polar sheeple... no particular reason but probably because i started off with a polar many moons ago.

Currently i have the V800 and M460,  my SOH has a M200.

I do have a garmin 400 (?) bike computer somewhere...but never use it, and a garmin golf watch which obviously polar don't do.

I prefer the Polar Flow software compared to Garmin connect or whatever it is, but then i don't have much experience with Garmin.

Garmin definitely have a wider product range and the watches look nicer and are more popular

Personally I think Polar Flow's web i/f is substantially better that Garmin Connect.

(Is the GPS accuracy issues sorted on the Fenix by now?  Ref to Garmin forums for more:

https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5-5s/152984-gps-accuracy?371929-GPS-Accuracy=  )

It is true that at the moment Polar does not have a new high end wearable. The V800, although a stunning watch will probably get replaced later this year.  (Seeing that your requirement is a wearable - however Polar does have dedicated cycling computers M460, V650)

Not interested in Suunto?

Yes - remember Suunto & Polar does not do ANT+, if that is a requirement.  (Although ANT dropouts might be a problem on the 5?   https://the5krunner.com/2017/05/25/fenix-5-5s-recall-would-you-do-that-if-you-were-garmin-right-now/  )  However I think re-broadcasts (BTLE / ANT) are possible with TICKR.

I must add - the service rendered by Polar in Midrand is absolutely fantastic!

(Context to my impressions  - I am using Polar M400, Suunto Spartan & Garmin Oregon for various reasons / activities)

Garmin probably have the best after sales service of anything in the cycling industry.

Garmin are also the benchmark and the rest try to keep up.

I went from a Polar 725 to a Garmin 500 years ago and have never looked back.

Garmin all the way !!!

Also went from Polar 725 to a Garmin Edge 820 in Septemer 2017.  I absolutely love my Garmin.  Still in the market for a multi sport HRM but also looking at Garmin rather than Polar.

Have not used the Garmin after sales service but must say that have always had good service from Polar in Midrand (IHF products).  You got to give credit where credit is due.  I had my Polar for more than 12 years.  But Polar got stuck somewhere and Garmin and other competitors caught up to them and actually passed them especially when you look at the pricing.
