Strava/phone gremlins

I have a fully functional S7 smartphone. Its been running Strava perfectly for over a year. In the last two weeks however, Strava has started malfunctioning. In fact its failed to properly record the last few rides I've done. I've rebooted the phone and even reinstalled Strava but the problem remains. Basically, it seems to be a tracking issue. It starts but then loses GPS and fails to track most of the ride and doesn't pick up segments as a result. The track is full of straight lines. I've tested it in the car without issues for short trips. Yesterday I took my Polar along and managed to track most of the ride but it too lost GPS an hour in for the first time ever.

Anybody else having Strava issues like this?

Maybe check your location settings, phones use AGPS not GPS, so it may have switched to determining position from networks and wifi only instead of using the GPS, set it to use the GPS and Networks not just GPS or just Networks.

There is a free app called GPS Locker.

This App will acquire Satellites and keep location services Active at all times while the App runs in the Background. I'm using Strava App together with GPS Locker and have never lost location even on a cloudy day. Samsung Galaxy A5. Start GPS locker first. It will beep when Sats are acquired. Then Start Strava App from within GPS locker.

But why would you use you phone to track rides? The battery never lasts a full ride.

How do you get your phone to last 4 to 16 hrs with the GPS and other apps running?

Damn my Garmin 500 only gets me about 16 to 18 hrs and this is frustrating to say the least.

Battery Lasts because Screen is OFF.

2 hours +- 15 % used (and my phone is OLD)

I've been having similar issues with my Huawei P8 Lite.  My previous Sony's worked without a hitch.  Now sometimes it stops recording and the app closes.  Sometimes it recovers all the data, other times I end up with straight lines.

I have set it to keep Strava running.  Odd thing I noticed yesterday - it stopped working coming down Mamba at Tokai and it's done it a couple of times there now... Could there be a 'blind spot' in the reception there?  Anyone else noticed a pattern in the where it switches off?

Check the other apps you have recently installed. I downloaded the Garmin Conect app on my S7 and Strava went haywire. Took me a while to figure out what was causing the problem.

And don't forget the apps which your device maintenance optimisation app will be switching off to save power.

Huh?

Do you have an iPhone then?

Also, do you often ride for longer than 18hours? If so, wowsers!

Some people don't want to spend money on a Garmin or GPS. I certainly don't. I use Strava for running in the mountains mostly so I can log some routes for the club and heve a feeling for distance vs time so if I lead a group run I know a rough time frame.

Not everyone is after gains and stats but still wants to know how far they went.

Honestly bike gadgets like power metres and gps units and heart rate monitors are probably the last thing I would consider spending money on and I know I'm not the only one who thinks so who rides a 'bit'.... (says the guy who just dropped a whole heap of money on a bike map board mount and a compass)

I have a Huawei p9 and experienced the exact same issues. Googled to try find a solution with no luck. Strava doesn't seem to like Huaweis!
