why is it when people ask what the reason for the larger-than-normal price hike it is called "moaning"?

yes the there's inflation and water restrictions etc, it would just be nice to get an explanation of why the price increase was larger, when compared to previous years.  (thank you Rock Guy for your analysis)

if there's some (let's say 5) people battling to cope with this years increase, i'll cover the extra R120 for you if you want to ride and can't afford the extra R10 a month.

there's no question that i'll renew.

Now imagine if there was no trail network in within say a 50km drive. How everyone would beg and plead for some farmer to make land available.

It is actually very simple:

If you feel it's value for money, buy a permit and enjoy the trails, which are world class.

if you feel it's not value for money, don't buy it. But please, then stop moaning that you don't see it as value for money.

These trails don't build themselves, and EVERY year, Patrick Roberts and his crew of trail builders slave away in some crazy wind, harsh sun, and encounter the snakes everyone has all of a sudden become aware of to build new sections and improve existing sections.

That's not even factoring in the likes of Bennet Nel and some of the other blokes around also jumping in to help build some fantastic trails.

Building and maintaining a trail does not come cheap, and as club members we are the main source of funding keeping these trails in the state they are in.

Not so long ago, everyone was wining and whinging about the mustard seed at Meerendal, and praising Patrick and his team for keeping the club maintained sections clear of this blight. That too comes at a cost. One can't have your sarmie buttered on both sides, expecting the trails to be tip top, but at a minimum price.

You must pay to play. If you don't want to pay, please don't play. Rather go ride your bike on the Seapoint promenade. That's free.

Julle mense kla erger as die lot wat huil oor DSTV.

LOL at all the moaners. Go and join Durbanville Golf Club, you’ll pay a few thousand for 6km worth of “track” to enjoy.

My membership pays for itself just by the discount the various places in the area offer for members.

@ the moaners.

Do you understand the sheer magnitude of costs associated to owning land not even mentioning the manhours and expenses related to maintaining trails?

Do you realise what the membership fees would be if the club had to buy the 140km trails?

Do you realise that 5 phone calls can cancel all the access to the farms?

Have you been to the SGM sharing your concerns? Obviously not. I wasn’t there as well but I was at the AGM this year and guess what, out of 6000 or so members there were maybe 30 members saying their say.

If R800 bucks a year or just over R2 per day is too much then rather cycle on the road where it’s free. Even if the fees are R2000 it’s still a bargain. I cannot even build a ramp at my house for R2000.

I really don't understand the perception that wanting a reason is considered moaning. No one is really disputing that it's still extreme value for money but that's not the problem. Posting a massive few increase (compared to previous years) and not explaining it, is however clearly causing a problem. even a simple paragraph explaining that costs of water and petrol had to be factored in, or that farmers want more money, or that new things are planned - any of this would've done a massive amount to calm people's nerves. It's just poor communication, and the fact that they disabled comments on the post regarding the fees just reinforces this.

As for the AGM, not attending does not mean you have no right to question or be informed of the reasons for the clubs decisions, it just means you can't complain about the direction these decisions are heading because you didn't utilise your opportunity to influence them. Yes the minutes will be published eventually, they may or may not provide clarity, but if they had the time to write up posts regarding how much money they want for next year they certainly had the time to summarise why.

I get the need to "understand" how your hard earned money which you exchanged for a permit is being spent by the club. Not getting a concise and clear direction as to why would frustrate people, I agree. The view I am taking is to wait and see what the club does in terms of upgrades / additions to the trails, as the extra 120 rand per rider, at an average of say 6000 riders, is quite a large sum (do the math). Way too much to be justified as a salary increase. I would at least expect to see some more trail features being added to the network, or more skills parks etc. in 2019.

But that is not my call, as I did not attend either the AGM or SGM. And to me at least, that is like not voting, and then complaining about the elected government. --> Pointless.

But knowing this club (not personally, but from my experience on the trails and how they manage it), we can expect more of the same greatness in the new year.

I will be adding a new board on my cockpit in the new year.

p.s. I see on the website that a holiday membership which is valid until 31 January is available for R250. please tell me that's not value for money..! You can make up that spend in 2 rides on all the trails, some of which as a non member you were not allowed to ride.

I thought the price of the yearly membership was well above the new R790 price already. Not sure what I have been reading and why I've been paying day rates at HK and Conters (apart from the joy of not having to have a board strapped to my bike and of course I like over aggressive guys asking if I have a permit then looking sullen and annoyed when I produce it).

I get the increase is more than before but then look at he price of butter in the last year, it's nearly doubled as has a lot of things. We're getting squeezed more on everything. My bike insurance went up about the same amount as well and a bag of bread, milk & basics at woolies is getting crazy.

Obviously people want to (and should) ask questions. It's good to keep people accountable. As for the new price I still think the single member ship is well worth it. Shame that some of the other options have dropped away. I'm not overly bothered about WPlas as I never get out there and if I'm road tripping then it's a day at Jonkers as that is the kind of riding I like.

I think for the money you get a great amount for that considering it's private trails and need to be maintained. I really only now ride conties with the odd trip to HK when it's not a weekend or anything below warm as that place is an oven at times.

I get that alot of people don't find it tech enough and with TM, Glen, Newlands and Tokai having some great trails I'm more swayed to go there as that is what I want to ride. The fact that you can get a card as a team for under R400 or a standard card for under R600 is just a bonus.

I also know that there are a lot of riders the don't want to ride what I want. There are a lot of riders who want to ride the trails that are in the TB networks and the crazy amount of riders at each location there is testament to that. TB seem to be adding extra trails and have added the skills park etc. Obviously it's not at a level for everyone but seems to be popular and helping people up their game. There are a lot of riders there that find parts of the network a challenge and are pushing themselves and there are lot of riders who only find joy on the DH line, the revised line from the mast or seasoning Tree Charge for the right line. There are a huge number of riders, rider types and levels and TB don't a bad job at all to give something for everyone. I get Rob does all the work and the trails at conties but its still in the network and if you ride there a bit chances are that the board is more economic than the day rate.

Will I bit the bullet and get a board? Probably, as I guess I ride Conts at least once a week and this year I've been paying cash. Times are harder so doing the maths it makes sense even if I only use 1 or 2 trails in the list. Will I attend the AGM next time? I think so just to try to push a bit more of the natural stuff on to the agenda.

Having spent quite a lot of time abroad living and riding in the last 5 years I can tell you a lot of places would die for the trails and opportunities that we have here in CT. There something for everyone and it's only getting stronger. You can see alot of effort goes into the access, building and maintenance on TB. If TB were the only options then I'd be pushing harder for more tokai, TM or jonkers style trails but there are those in place at tokai, TM and jonkers so my decision is simple. If I want to ride some of the trails and enjoy what is on offer and think it's worth it then I'll pony up the money. If I don't think it's got what I want to ride or it's not going to make sense then I won't.

Only Conties has interesting ITO of different descents. Some off camber, flat cornering, slower technical stuff. Nobody wants DH lines all over the show. But we also don't want berms EVERYWHERE. Like building up the berms so big on the last Hoogies descent. WHY people!? Because it was difficult to ride them? I thought we rode bike to have fun by challenging outselves.

Is it wrong to like the the berms on supertubes lower? I do enjoy sessioning them and trying to go fast and lean the bike way, way over, trying to rail them as perfectly as possible , working on the Fabian B cornering tips and trying to find out just where the limit of positioning, traction and weighting is.  Of course I never try to roost or scrub them or ever try the super ego, video pro wheelie out of berm manoeuvre. :whistling:

I think it can be good training to understand correct cornering, what different approaches do to keeping speed, not braking and trusting your tyres. Kind of mixes it up from the car park corners drills and other small skills repeats. That's me at my level. Other people will find just doing a loop of conties blue a real challenge, progression and achievement and once up skilled may be work towards maybe trying something like tree charge.

I was on a trail in Germany recently. Really popular and people come from a good distance to ride there. 16km, total ascent of 18m through the woods and the number of flat, small, really badly built berms one after another after another actually made me get sea sick. Fully Bermed out.
