I had this with my phone recently. If its Android, this may help:

Go to you Settings > Battery settings > Manage Apps (battery usage)

Here, you can enable individual apps to run in the backgrounds, using GPS. If your phone is like mine (Xiaomi), then OS aggressively disables backgrounds apps from using GPS etc, to preserve battery. I added exceptions for Strava, Polar Beat etc.

This solved the same issue on my Huawei, although watch out when the OS does an update as it might default the settings back...

Since you have a Xiaomi phone, watch this video:

I used to record with my Xiaomi phone as well and experienced issues with my recordings.

After watching the videos everything worked flawlessly.

I hope this helps.

Same with my Xaiomi.

This shouldn't make a difference (unless an additional powersaving setting is applied, which doesn't exist on my version of android), I've been cycling with my phone on powersaving for over a year and no issues.

Shouldn't make a difference but apparently it does on some devices.

Exactly as Hilton said.

It's Xiaomi's MIUI OS killing the GPS the moment the screen goes off in an effort to save battery. Add an exception and your problem is sorted.

Must be some merit to it seeing I get 2 days battery out of my Redmi 4X!

I get the same battery life on my Redmi Note 4A.

Worth fiddling with the settings instead of buying an expensive GPS device

You can get an edge 20/25(Think this is about the most basic model in the edge range) for like 2.5K brand new. Trust me, Money well spent.

I know this is not what this thread is about but if you are serious about logging your rides then buying a proper GPS device is 100% worth it. Far more reliable, accurate and hassle-free.
