Giro d'Italia 2019

The Gavia is looking pretty chilly at the moment. Holding thumbs that they can race up there. A lot of clearing going on to give it a best shot.

With the Extreme weather protocol now in place the classic stages like Hampstens won't ever happen again and while it's a shame for folklore I can't imagine that any pro wants to go anywhere near those conditions. Spring in Italy hey? Got to love the Giro.

I'm an optimist. Let's tune in to todays pan flat stage and see if the world has been turned on it's head and the usual break of local riders dangling up the road by about 3 minutes hasn't happened. I'm guessing there will be a rider from Bardiani and at least one from Nippo-Vini and maybe one from Israel Cycling.

Anyone want to wager?

14:01:05 CEST

And it looks like we might already have our breakaway for the day. Luca Covili (Bardiani-CSF) jumped off the front and Sho Hatsuyama (Nippo-Vini Fantini) followed and then the peloton sat up. Job done.

What?!? No ICA riders?

Time to tune in and see how the commentators are dealing with this one.

I'd be having a word with who ever the offenders mechanic was and pulling him up about his cleanliness. That set up was filthy looking at the grease rolling up tummys leg. Standards people, standards.

Don't bring your MTB standards here.  No chain tattoo = no lube.  This is a road race after all!

Today was just a waste of time........ hours and hours of nothingness followed by a crash and a sprint. The mountains cannot come soon enough.

All good, saved the giro laying on a transfer day. Just get them to pedal there.

This is the first time I'm watching pro cycling properly and I have to say I am blown away by how many horrible crashes there are. Has there been a stage without one so far apart from the TTs? How do theae guys get in the saddle each day knowing that therw will probably be at least one crash?

And why are there so many? Is the drive and pressure to win causing them to take more risks? Has it always been like this?

Have a look at the gopro footage taken inside the bunch.

Scary shoulder rubbing and shoving going on.  All in the name of getting over the line first

I'd say it used to be even worse!
