For the best story in that vein read this: where a SR-71 Blackbird at Mach 3 and 80 000 ft disintegrated around the pilot who was not able to eject.

Even better for Blackbird fans, read the book that is mentioned in the article - it's truly outstanding.

Nice article. There is also an article somewhere about Blackbird flights over SA back in the day.

On Avcom also a storey about the navigator who was partly ejected form his A 6 (I think) but which was still landed safely on a carrier nogal; parachute wrapped around the tail. Your lucky day!

Thankfully still young and had loss of income insurance in place.

Death of an 86-yr old airline: South African Airways to fire all employees

April 18, 2020: Approximately a year ago at the Air Cargo Africa 2019 in Johannesburg, South African Airways' (SAA) Group CEO Vuyani Jarana (who ended his term on July 31, 2019), shared different contours of the work in progress for saving the terminally ill company to Logistics Update Africa. But the lack of commitment to fund SAA by the government systematically undermined the implementation of the strategy, making it increasingly difficult to succeed.

Now, SAA is planning to lay off its entire 4,700 employees, compelling to ground the 86-year-old national carrier. The state-owned airline has offered compensation deals to all staff from the end of April after administrators - Les Matuson and Sizwe Dongwana concluded that a successful turnaround is now unlikely, according to a proposal to eight labour groups seen by Bloomberg News. The basic value of compensation will be one-month pay per year of service and will depend on the successful disposal of assets such as real estate, rotables, and trade debts.

On March 26, acting CEO Zuks Ramasia has resigned from SAA, opting for early retirement by serving till April 14, 2020.

Will someone be able to turn around SAA?

Lets say a company buys it?

A Chinese company for instance?

I'd say its a lost cause by now as a going concern-  one sad example of destructive transformation. But there must be some value in the pilots, SA Technical techs, landing slots at the like of Heathrow, so maybe one of the big players might take those assets and amalgamate them into their own structures, pure speculation though.

Most of the  management, ground staff and cabin crew I would say form part of the liabilities.

Never that that CEO has already been redeployed for more empowerment malarkey elsewhere after taking a convenient early retirement.

Is this it then? South Africa will no longer have a national airline?

I think if they don't use the slots at various airports they actually lose them. Not sure if they can keep them for as long as it takes to sell them. Maybe Star Alliance partners can use them meantime?

Also - is a landing slot at Heathrow as valuable as what is was a few months ago? I gather Heathrow has shuttered one runway and two terminals, and traffic won't be picking up soon.

I see they (Dept of Public Enterprise) subsequently issued a letter after the article in the press (posted above). They say that no such agreement (to make wide scale retrenchments) has been concluded.

Very sad to see a company as proud end up like this through corrupt political madness. I hope the chickens will go home to roost with those responsible.

Unlikely, there has been a procession of fools running the show, board members etc most of whom stay in circulation thanks to the idiocy of certain policies.

One would think this might prompt a reality check but the elite are self serving and live in a make believe bubble.
