GT Mountain Bikes - are they to be laughed at?

Hi.

I am looking to change bikes - possibly to a 29er.  I am currently riding Mongoose Canaan - but tired of the linkage issues that I continually experience.

I was considering one of the many GT mountain bikes and I mentioned this to a cyclist who said no way - they are rubbish and you will be laughed at.

Well not that I care about people laughing but are GT's really rubbish - I am talking entry level here eg Zaskar... don't have huge bucks to buy a beautiful bike :)

Would value any 'brand' expert views.

All I can take from this is that you need new friends!

..GT bike or Gary Turner himself is the reason we have Mountain Bikes .Tell your cyclist friend his an idiot, GT is up there with the top bike brands. You will upset some diehard GT fans with a post like this.

So go get one, you wont regret it.

Your friend, like many have mentioned, is clueless. GT as far as I know is the ONLY brand to hold a win in both the EWS and DH world cup piloted by the same rider in one season. If that's not cool, I dunno what is.

There is nothing wrong with GT. A legendary Brand with a lot of history and pedigree. Besides the point, but they have their fare share of World Cup titles, XC, DH , BMX, you name it and they’ve been around the block.

I wanted a force among other options and omnico dont bring them in. I couldnt find a frameset at the time, and so I went.with guerilla.gravity. I got an awesome deal from them.

Aramex global shipper is the cheapest shipping option.

I cannot believe that many cyclists have become this snobbish. It seems to have become a sport of who has "the" bike.

Two weekends back at Hennops there were three riders who passed me along the route. Two had highly specced, very pricey bikes (both dual sus, one a high end Scott and one a high end Spez), and the third had a bike which brand I could not recognize but it did not look like a modern highly priced bike. It had NO suspension and only a single gear. He kept up with his two mates and looked like he had a lot of fun.

Just goes to show you don't need a R60k hard tail or R100k soft tail to be able to ride and enjoy it.

I am sure the GT you are looking at will be able to endure the trails you want to ride.

Go for it and don't care who thinks what.
