How often do you really use your GoPro?

I have been toying with the idea of getting a GoPro but worried it might just land up in the drawer or in the cupboard.

 

For those of you who have them, do you use them every ride?

 

How many of you have them and don't use them?

 

Would I need a super powerful laptop or PC to edit the content?

 

I travel extensively for work and was wondering if it would double-up as a nice little travel camera.

In my experience, the novelty wears off really quickly. Ended up becoming just another piece of tech lying in the cupboard.

Almost daily....well not quite...but a lot....used on almost every ride....do not need a super computer, BUT you need the time and patient to edit your stuff otherwise this is the main reason they end up on the shelf..its the best for travel but remember its designed for close-up stuff so you gotta get real tight with your subject...useless for wide vistas (unless strapped to a FPV racing drone!)...best action camera there is and the next Gen is due out soon Hero 8....most of my editing is for myself but I occasionally release videos....

Depends on this person i suppose and the gopro.

 

I've got a 5 black and i use it for bicycle, motorcycle, hiking in funny places and fishing.

 

If you get one look at a gopro 5 and up the user interfacing is much better and it is waterproof without a case.

hahaha I found that all gopro footage of me riding was as boring as the *** handycam movies my grandfather used to make us watch of his trips and cruises.

 

He was so proud and got so excited, but in reality it was lame.

 

I wouldn't dream of making anyone sit through my ill attempts at shredding the gnar and churning the loam......

Yes I have one plus all the mounts and all the goodie megafters that go with it - You need editing skills and a decent PC to make decent videos

 

Mine now found its place next to the food blender / smoothie maker / snakwich toaster / popcorn maker / ice machine / hand held cake mixer / griller / back massager / abb crunch machine / calf exerciser /  DVD - CD rack / VHS tapes / video player / 26er MTB / Electronic pic frame displayer

I got one for a cycling holiday, and I expect to use it while riding there, and almost certainly will offload it when I get home. I shoot stills on a mirrorless and have ZERO inclination to learning video editing, so... The GoPro 7 seems to shoot decent stills too, so that's a bonus on and near the bike

I have a GoPro Hero 7 Silver and I use mine to shoot all my club rides and races.

 

I've used all the various mounts, including handlebar, chesty and rear facing (under my saddle). I haven't tried the helmet mount, because that really makes you look like a dork!

 

Of all the mounts, I've settled on the rear facing mount, because I find it much more interesting to watch mugs instead of bums! The facial expressions of riders behind you are sometimes priceless, and it gets interesting when they start picking their noses and other things...

 

I use Garmin VIRB Edit software on my MacBook Pro to overlay the GPX data onto the video footage and then upload the entire ride/race video onto YouTube.

 

I couldn't be bothered to edit the video any more than the above, so my videos are probably boring to most people, but I often find myself re-watching some of my videos, especially before races when I watch my previous year's race video.

Got one, used it once, sold it. 

 

The footage reminded me of an analogy from a surfing coach. The first time you watched yourself surfing was about as shocking and awful as watching yourself having sex. You think you're going great guns, all style, performance and well worth watching when in fact you're flailing about, you're pretty uncoordinated, it's not exactly exciting, not one else really wants to watch it and definitely not what you see the professionals doing. Same applied to my riding.

Was lucky enough to win a Hero 4, have used it for swim analysis a couple of times and once on a track day at Kyalami.  Tried for a bike ride and footage was rather boring.

 

Apart from that lives in a cupboard with a case with all the accessories.

 

As I didn't pay for it, so will likely stay in the cupboard until I decide to use it again..... if ever!!.

I have one.  Took it swimming with the seals last year.  That was the last time I used it.  Made a little video of the trip, but I found it such a mission that it put me off.  The process is simple enough, and I have a nice PC and Adobe Elements, but it just brought me no real joy.  

Tried filming on the bike once, but it was crap and boring.  Then again, I don't enjoy POV bike stuff in general.

If you're looking at buying one for cycling you'll either have to get a high quality wearable gimbal or the newer gopro with the improved stabilization.

 

Without a stabilizer the footage looks trash when the trails get bumpy...If you have the correct hardware a gopro/action cam is an amazing piece of equipment.

 

Also, consider other manufacturers - I owned a few gopro cameras and NON of them came close to the Garmin Virb ultra 30. It's also a bit cheaper too.
