Good day guys! I've been trying on dr google, but I get more confused with every article that I read.

I have a Silverback Slade 2 (2014) model. 3x10 speed. http://www.bikeroar.com/products/silverback/slade-2-2014/specs

My wife recently started riding it as it fits her pretty good so I'm thinking of getting something else for me and upgrading a few things on the bike...What would be the best route?

I was thinking something like Slx groupset with 2x11? Will the XT rear derailleur still be usable?

If I go this route, what do I need? Groupset, Crank...

Bare in mind it is mostly ridden on tar and some gravel/farm roads, but I think she would gain from better gearing.

I know it's and oldish bike, so I don't want to drop a ton of cash obviously. Just considering options going forward but the frame is pretty light in my opinion and a good fit for her.

Thanks

10 and 11 don't mix

change the wheels and get a 2x 10spd hollowtech crank to save a TON of weight

The current front shifter works on 2 and 3 spd FD

I'd go 1 step further = 1 X 10

Unless the groupset needs replacement, I wouldn't spend any money on it to be honest. It's perfectly fine for your wife. You will save a couple hundred grams maybe, which in my books is not worth it. Rather look at lighter and faster tyres if she's only gonna be riding tar/gravel roads.

yebo, just make sure you get a BB with it. you may need to face the bb shell as well

Just as a matter of interest, the FC-M677 (2x10 SLX) crank weighs 722g. The FC-M522 (3x10 Octalink) weighs 686g. So in reality he'll be spending R1700 odd for something that weighs more.

and the weight of the BB itself?

that's usually where the weight lies with octalink

Fair enough, the Octalink with a BB is around 944g, and a Hollowtech BB is around 70-80g, which puts the SLX at near as makes no difference 800g. R1700+ the cost of a bottom bracket for 150g of savings is not worth it in my book, not in that area at least.

Yes but Octalink is an absolutely diabolical system. May as well be a Trek with its BB90 with 37mm internal bore and buck shot for bearings

I'd take the HollowTech even if it was heavier just for the improved reliability.

Bury Octalink and bury it deep so there's no chance of resurrection

Good info guys! Besides weight savings, will the change help for some more top end speed?

Nope, Octalink will slow you down. The bearings will wear and it will grind and away. Octalink is one of Shimano's big faux pas of the past and best left in the 90's with flex stems and purple bibs

Sure, I don't think anyone is arguing with you there, but personally, the cost is not worth it for the bike and its intended use. Perhaps it is for the OP, in which case he should definitely do it, but I would spend my money elsewhere in this instance first.

No, you will actually lose potential speed. Since the current crank has a 42T blade, and the SLX has a 36T large blade, you will have a shorter total gear ratio available. That is whether your wife actually uses the current gears to their maximum range.

I'd leave the bike as is...for now.

Changing groupset from 10 to 11 speed is not going to give you bang for buck.

I ride a carbon hardtail with top of the range 2x10 components

i don't quite understand the gearing question.

having the triple ring gives you wide range of speeds,

play around here, but with that combo you get 19.5=>105.7 gear inches, or a range of ~520%

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gear-calc.html

if you drop a bucketload of cash you could go 1x12, which means only one derrailleur to play with, but then also a range of about 500%.

in my mind the best upgrade you can do is wheels. being 27.5 you might not have that many options, but you can always move them onto a newer bike if she really gets into it.
