Turn the helmet pad side up in the shower when you shower after a ride, hang to dry. Literally all there is to it.

If it's a bath, a dunk and rinse under the tap.

I did my helmets in the bath with me once, my wife gave me funny looks and couldn't stop laughing, now its awkward to do again....

I suspect it depends upon how badly you come off. I tend to think that in a mild to moderate crash the cheaper helmets will probably protect you just as well is the better more expensive helmets. But in a really severe crash, the tougher outer shell of the more expensive helmets may pay dividends. When I crashed with a cheap helmet, the outer shell broke up; when I crashed with a more expensive helmet with a tougher outer shell, it didn't break up, although it did deform a bit; but it held together and remained intact. In a pretty heavy crash, that could potentially be the difference between serious head injuries and a far less serious set of injuries. Simply an opinion – I don't have any clear evidence for it, other than my own experience.

My understanding a higher price generally leads to a lighter, more breathable helmet, not necessarily safer.

But a lighter helmet means less inertia on you head when you do go down, and less inertia is a good thing in those situations. So maybe a more expensive helmet is not designed to be safer, but it can technically be safer.

On the contrary, a cheaper helmet has less ventilation, so the risk of something protruding through a vent is lower. Again, not designed to be safer, but it can technically be safer.

Each helmet has its purpose, and that is to protect tot head-decide what works best for the given conditions you ride

Pictures are fresh off the camera roll, I had an OTB on a drop-off last Saturday and probably went in head first. This is my Fox Dropframe trail helmet. I don't regret spending the money on this one. The impact had enough force to give me 4 compression fractures of my upper vertebrae (and 2 broken ribs as a bonus), but just had a few forehead scrapes from the backing to the pads digging into my skin.

Now to figure out what to get next, but I won't be complaining about the performance of this example.

Ps. Bloodstain visible for added authenticity.

Surprised there has not been a topic on protection gear scaremongering after Cycle Lab's latest email....

Did a comparison between my Bell Sixer and 4Forty the other day. There difference in price is significant between the two. Besides the obvious differences (MIPS, indexed visor, integrated GoPro mount, better ventilation all on the Sixer) the fit is the biggest difference. The Sixer really wraps around my noggin and is supremely comfortable. It literally feels like wearing a glove, so much so that wearing a sweat band with the helmet is basically impossible. The 4Forty is not a bad helmet by any stretch, but the fit is definitely not as precise or secure. Fit is a significant part of the protection offered by a helmet and I'm happy to pay the extra zars for a Sixer vs a 4Forty

My giro after a spectacular over the handlebars crash into some rocks yesterday. Nice thick gash through it and few areas broken off.

Considering I was badly winded and some other bumps and scrapes, I was more concerned with my ribs, I only really noticed the helmet damage this am.

Could have been a nasty gash on my head, so will take it as win and go get a replacement today

Watch yourself - if you had enough energy to break the helmet then that shock and force may have rattled your brain a bit. This is how i ended up where i did. if you are at all off go and get checked out as you can get horrible side effects of concussion.
