How often do moterbike helmets get replaced?

Acoording to the "it is your brain spend lots" statement, Swift makes an excellent point - if the safety of your mind is the primary motivstor, buy a DH helmet.

So heres a question

How does chucking your helmet in the washing mashing on a cold cycle affect it ?

I'd guess lots and lots of little bumps isn't good for structural integrity.

So soaking it won't affect it, but the spin cycles likely will

just to be clear, it doesnt go in there alone, there are clothing items in there too, so it should soften the blows.

2 different helmets. 2 different results

First one: heavy shoulder and head plough and a few minutes in darkness

Second otb with a heavy landing

However both did their job.........

It still strikes me as a singularly bad idea to throw a helmet into a washing machine. They weren't designed to be cleaned or treated that way.

As MudLark states, not how it should be cleaned.

Many moons ago when bike shops sold helmets they always told you, "if you drop it on the floor it's done it's work, consider replacing it."

Many little bumps with the other stuff in the machine is not good

Then you buying the wrong brands.

Most of the big brands off crash replacements in the first 3 years (1 per helmet purchase). I know Bell & Giro offer a 70% discount on retail for crash replacement policy.

In most cases, the more you pay, the better safety is of the helmet. The Giro Aether is a prime example with spherical MIPS.

Can’t put a price on brains.

i wonder where my tillslip is now (oh wait over 3 years i'm sure)

bell giro 3 years 30% RRP

2 years, original owner, replacement will be 45% rrp

At the motorcycle club each and every helmet rep started their pitch with "A R1000 helmet for a R1000 head" ....

NO ... I never considered the cheapest helmets, but there is still a huge difference in price between a decent helmet and the top of the line units ....

Frankly, FIT and functionality typically decided what I bought.

Now with cycling helmets ... I buy mid price units that carry bicycle brand names, such as Scott helmets. Hoping they are not putting their name on rubbish ....

Helmets are a ripoff.

Yes yes, it is protecting your head. Yes yes it is important.

A seat belt will save your life, doesn't mean it has to cost R3k.

Helmets are a ripoff. The actual cost of production:retail price is approaching Gillette razor ripoff territory.

My friend's wife was in an accident. The seat belts of her car had to be replaced (apparently pretensioners must be replaced after a single accident). Try R17k per side for a new seat belt.

But I agree, more expensive helmets don't mean better protection.

Turn the helmet pad side up in the shower when you shower after a ride, hang to dry. Literally all there is to it.

If it's a bath, a dunk and rinse under the tap.

I did my helmets in the bath with me once, my wife gave me funny looks and couldn't stop laughing, now its awkward to do again....
