Thread Hyjack - looking for some new MTB shoes, but need something that is easy to walk in. We often do rides where there are hike-a-bike sections. Any recommendations?

Ladies/gents,

Two questions:

1. can anyone suggest which manufacturer makes the widest MTB shoes. I mean laterally, from the ball of the foot forward?

2. I've got a pair of Shimano M520 pedals. The instructions say only SPD shoes should be used with them. Can anyone confirm this? Is there no other shoe type which these pedals can be fitted to?

Any info would be much appreciated.

thanks

they make different lasts and different widths. Even their bottom of the range shoes are superb, high quality units.

The toe box is much more square than other brands

As someone with (very) wide feet who has tried many of the above brands, i can confirm that the two widest are:

- Lake

- Bontrager

the only problem with Bontrager is that the heel cup is also large volume on their wide versions

Wait are those Lake shoe prices the actual legit 100% real prices?  Not going to lie, that is pretty wild.

have you seen the prices of other top end shoes ?

I have very wide feet.

Tried Specialized and Lake and Adidas which all are wide.

I now only wear FiveTen which for me are the widest upfront and comfortable too and great shoes for MTB flats.

I have shimano wides. But feel they are to big sometimes. especially the tongue it can get uncomfortable

This is the wrong crowd to post such utterances.

A thread of great interest to me as the wide shoe problem is real! My biggest issue with local stock is very few (to no) brands bring in anything bigger than a EU48 and even these are in short supply. So getting anything to first try on is near impossible as most companies don't want the liability of holding a large size (and wide) shoe that may not move. I understand the sentiments but it's average as a consumer.

Mini rant aside, I found Pearl Izumi to be one of the better wide shoes BUT I had to import these and was only willing to take the risk because of an awesome special through Amazon. But if you're wanting flat pedal shoes? Pffft, good luck finding anything local that is big enough (i.e. EU49)

I think they great and they have come out at the top of a few reviews.

Do yourself a favour ... go test fit a pair of Spezialized 2FO shoes ...

Tried the expensive twin boa ones and also the cheaper lace ones today funnily enough - very nice and still stiff and light enough for us average plonkers.

I have the el-cheapo lace ones.

After a 50 years of buying one or two sizes up to get the required width I simply LOVE these 2FO shoes !!

I can spend a full day in these shoes.  All the pre-event book-in walking, the actual ride, and milling about at the post-ride.  And these shoes are still cheaper than the inserts I need for my normal day-to-day shoes, while being more comfortable.  My wife has actually suggested I get another pair for general use off the bike.

Granted, I had to wait almost 2 months for them to get stock of the larger sizes .... so well worth the wait.
