Unless there are people driving the pace in B and C that are out of position then its probably unlikely.

Anyone else starting at the back and attempting a reasonable time? It's my first event in 6 years, so if anyone's keen to join my 100km ITT attempt I'll be glad for the help...

What group would that be?

I'm a reasonably fit MTB dude doing my first road race. Not on a mtb, so happy to join your quest if I can keep up. I'm in group X.

I've been in this exact position. 2017 99er was my first ever road ride. I was fit but had zero seeding. I started in group CC (3 after group Z basically), but luckily 2 other guys were really keen to work. Actually we spent the first 10km trying to drop one another until one of us suggested working together, which we did for the next 70km or so. I managed 3:05 but had to be lifted out of my bike because my body was locked into a T-Rex position. It was still one of the most fun races ever though, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Either you'll be lucky and have other guys who want to work, or you'll solo until you reach a sort of balance point where the riders in front of you are too strong to overtake with ease and it starts to make more sense to ride with them. If I were in your shoes I'd go pretty hard until the halfway turnaround point to reach a good bunch, you'll need protection from the headwind on the way back. Then have a crack in the last few km if there's still something in the tank.

Been riding and racing road bikes on and off since age 13, so I know what needs to be done... just clutching at a straw here cos it may make me feel better about a potential 100km time trial if I know there are others in the same boat.

Basically just gonna keep an eye on the heart rate up till the 80km mark and burn any gas I have left in the tank on the last 20.

the first half of this feels really fast, especially now without vissershok. The wind somehow is always at your back going north too...and it's basically downhill.

I agree with @NickGM because I have done this that way too in the past.

I'd smash the first half and look for a faster rider or two on the way. Even a strong 'diesel engine type toppie' will do on this route i think. The fatter the better for the second half into the wind haha.
