Can anyone comment on the accuracy of the HR sensor on the F7 or Epix during HIT or Crossfit sessions? I still have a F5x and while the sensor is fairly accurate for running or cycling, for some reason it is way off for HIT and Crossfit. At times during a workout when I know for a fact my HR is around 160 / 170, the F5x has it at 90 or 100. When using the chest strap I don't have the issue.

Would like to get the Epix, but not if it's going to have the same issue.

I have personally not tested it - as I have adopted the view that an HR strap is a MUST when doing HIT. There are many reports about the F7/Epix being a LOT better during HIT (new sensors and all) - but I do think there is always a chance of it being somewhat off. Simply too much watch movement. Hence me always using an HR belt.

My experience is short, but the HR sensor is definitely more accurate than the one on my 6 is. It’s more stable too an tracks more accurately. However it is not going to be better than a strap. Or even equal to it.

edit: just did a hard 10 km run, very happy with the heart rate readings. Very accurate and much less erratic that the experience with the 6. Also the battery life is incredible. Been playing around on it solidly, done about 100 minutes of activity, ox pulse on over night, tested health status 3 or 4 time and after 24 hours it’s on 92 percent.

EPIX vs 7S Solar.

So after spending some time with the base 7S Solar unit and then base Epix Gen 2 unit these are my thoughts.

Both are brilliant.

There are only 2 major differences worth noting is the screen and battery life.

  1. The Epix is hands down a nicer screen.
  2. And the Fenix hands down wins on battery.

Some detail:

The Epix with HR enabled, screen up to 100% and gesture enabled (the screen stays on all the time but goes brighter when turned to look at it) give me a 5 day battery life.

The smaller Fenix 7S by comparison gave me 11 days. and this is the smallest version! very impressive.

The screen is chalk and cheese, the Epix is so much nicer!

that said...

The best analogy i can think of is when buying a new TV. In the store you have the two TV's sitting side by side.

One tv you can afford, the other you cannot (costs aside on this one). The difference in display quality and brightness while the two TV's are sitting side by side is clear for everyone to see. BUT when you take the "dull" affordable TV home and there is nothing to compare it to, it looks totally acceptable and you quickly forget about how lovely the brighter, sharper TV looked.

The owner of the Fenix 7 when sitting next to his mate who has the Epix is going to have screen enve for certain.

The owner of the Epix in the same breathe would also be a little miffed he has to charge his watch more than twice as often as the equivalent Fenix unit.

If you are anything like me; i hate not having my watch on my wrist 24/7 - charging the unit a pain. During charging i lose out on recording all that important data that i never look at it. 🤪

Looks:

SCREENS ASIDE: Overall i'd say i prefer the physical look of the Epix. I did not think i would as the online pictures make the silver finish look a bit sub par - that said the grey with steel finish in real life really makes the watch look properly upper class when compared to the black Fenix versions - it really could pass as a dress watch.

Had my 7 x a week now. Even with playing around a lot on it and doing a daily healthy check and about 3 hours of activity it’s on 72 percent so battery life is incredible. I used the pulse ox for 2 nights too.

As to functionality, it tracks satellite a lot better and picks them up quicker, HR is a lot less erratic and tracks well.

stamina is a new function, not convinced of it yet to be fair.

Connection to headphones far quicker too. Touch screen also makes functioning easier.

is it worth moving from a 6 pro to a 7x. One of my reasons was battery life , however given the coin it’s probably not really worth it to be fair but this may change as more functionality is added to the 7 range. ( assuming there is additional functionality in the future)

amazing device in its own right though. The functionality and data we have is amazing. Went for a medical last week and HR and pulse ox was spot on to the medical device grade devices.

Thanks for the review.

The devices are so nice that their years-old Fenix 3 is still comparative to the 7x.

A bit like Apple iPhones.

Out of interest, anyone using a garmin venu 2 as a dedicated watch for tracking your rides. If so, quality of screen, battery, accuracy of heart rate, issues?

Yes - It is a very decent watch and fulfils most of one's need for every day use. My wife has one and is extremely happy. However....If you have any intention of using the Venu 2 on a Smart Indoor Trainer - be aware! It is limited in what sensors it can pick up. In many advanced smart trainers the power/cadence gets broadcast on a single bluetooth channel. The Venu 2 is not capable of detecting such sensors. You will pick up the trainer's speed and distance etc - but will miss power/cadence. Not a shortcoming that will bother many people - but just so you are aware. Battery life is fairly decent - about 5-7 days for my wife between charges and she trains about 3-4 times a week. Screen is a beauty! HR sensor very accurate although you must remember like any other watch - it is always recommended to use a dedicated HR strap for outdoor/training use. Everyday wear - it is spot on!

Also - the Venu 2 has (in my opinion) a nicer/cleaner user interface (widgets/glances )than the more fancy Epix 2 (which I have).
