I blame the cyclists for the prices that is skyrocketing because we still buy bikes, parts and apparel at these prices.

and WHY would "they" drop the prices when bikes are pre-sold even before the ship docks here .....

Being new to the sport, I can’t really comment on price increases, though I can agree that anything to do with cycling has a hefty price tag.

An interesting note that I do not understand, why do some of you say you updated your insurance because the price went up? When I insured my 2 bikes, they just wanted to know what those bikes cost new, not what a similar bike costs now. For example, I just got a 2019 SLR 6, they wanted to know what that bike cost new, not the SLR 7 or whatever the closest equivalent, or should I be insuring for that price?

Check with your insurer/broker ...

Bikes are insured for "current replacement" value. .... totally different to the bookie value used for cars.

Upgraditis, FOMO for all the new bling irrespective of the price... Ja we're all guilty at some point in our lives

Unfortunately I'd guess that prices are set in the US in dollars - and we just get the converted value, plus shipping, margins, and taxes. Not a happy formula these days, but nothing to do with what ever is going on in the SA market - the squeeze is happening in the US. Even ebay is looking expensive, and that's before you get stuff over here. The exception is our second hand market (which probably reflects an outdated sense of what new bikes/components might cost).

If you're looking for 'value' I would guess you might look at supply from China (but no local agents, yet), or just ride older or down spec'ced bikes. Big name bikes and groupsets are getting close to being out of reach.

Either you replace your worn parts with the same stuff , or you buy junk that will fall apart in weeks or you just stop cycling full stop.

The choice is quite limited to those 3 options

This isn’t a bike thing - it’s called inflation and its spiraling unsustainably. Down  here at the butt end of Africa it stings a little more despite the almighty ront

Bikes might be disproportionate but it’s everywhere and everything

Meat has gone up 20 percent since December, we all know fuel ain’t free and even surfboards have skyrocketed in line with bicycles.  How anyone can buy a car or a first home these days bewilders me

And yet my LBS can’t unpack high end ebikes fast enough.

I think we will all be participating in events in a few years where riding the latest bike will feel indecent because then people will know you went to Bishops (fill in appropriate trust fund type school)

ti bikes are the future - rigid with v brakes and single speed

bring on the revolution

You should probably check this with your insurer!

The way I understand it, is that it is you responsibility to ensure that you are covered for current replacement value of the insured item. In the event of a claim, they will make an assessment and if the replacement of your stolen bike is R100k, but the insured amount/value on your policy is only R50k, they use the rule of average (or something like that) and will actually only pay you out R25k because you were 50% under-insured. Maybe not all policies are the same, but it's worth checking. Can only imagine the double heartbreak, first your bike gets stolen.... then you find out insurance is only giving you a quarter of what you need to buy a replacement!

It sucks... I bought a new Epic EVO in 2020 for R35k, but the equivalent replacement model is now R65k, so I'm paying an insurance premium that is a LOT higher than what I had bargained for when I bought the bike👎

mate its not just bikes. I sell cars, try explaining the huge price tags on cars these days.

You make a good point. Suppose Russian and Ukraine aren't helping, fuel hikes and everything that follows are probably next. I can only imagine the automotive industry right now.

At least we will be furthest away from where World War 3 starts...🧨😝🏴🔥

Back in 2005 I bought a brand new dual suspension bike with XT and decent Fox suspension for R15k. In 2013 another bike with similar components but more travel for R25k. By buying a different frame and a better fork I upgraded my riding experience until 2017 when a frame warranty and a generous offer from Specialized gave me a whole new bike for the same price as my 2005 bike.

At that time, this effectively my fourth dual suspension bike would have cost R55k retail which I most definitely could not have afforded. I'm not sure what i will do when this one breaks, but I'm busy restoring a motorbike so maybe that's what I'll be riding for fun in a few years time 🙂

Right?! Funny you mention that, myself is busy with getting a few dirtbikes restored. At this rate a top of the line KTM 300 is cheaper than the equivalent MTB.

I've always said that we are our own worst enemies. So long as we keep buying then the bike industry will keep pushing the prices.

It's out of control at the moment and I don't know how I'm meant to buy proper bikes for my kids when they want to start racing one day.

Yeap, it's almost a pipe dream for anyone without considerable amounts of disposable income. As you say, as long as people keep buying they'll keep pushing the prices.
