Amazing the number of reactions on this topic .... 🙈

Its simple, dont be a dwis, just pay for what you stuffed down your throat + ~ 10%.

Easy peasy .... 🤷‍♂️

Guess we lucked into a small group of considerate and generous mates who all happen to be different ethnicities. If only the lazy gits would get back on their bikes...

Years ago I went to Panarotti's for all-you-can-eat pizza. Our group was quite big and so was the bill.

When it came time to pay and everyone was putting in their cash, adding for a decent tip, the final person (an acquaintance) decided that we'd paid too much and not only did they not contribute towards the bill or tip, but took R10 out of the cash pile, to pay for their parking.

They did this without flinching or even seeing the error in etiquette. The rest of us were speechless.

clearly he never worked in a restaurant, jeez i don't miss that stage of my life.

cash seems to have mostly disappeared from restaurant payments in my experience. There would be a pile of notes and often people overpay as there's no change available. You'd often get the (I never draw from the ATM!) guy saying he would put it all on his card and keep the cash. all eyes to see what he would actually pay.

Plenty of places in CT and all over flat out refuse to do separate bills for tables…so better have a notepad, app or calculator handy😅

who does split bills anyway? big diff between a split bill and split payments, these days 99% of the time it's either snapscan/zapper/ the waiter taking CC machine around to all the parties.

and then sometimes there's a fight to keep the bill so they can claim the expense...........

Had a mid ride coffee in Stellenbosch.  I often ride with this person, but first time did the mid ride coffee thing ...

Pay time ... neither of us had cash on us.  (okay, there is an emergency note in the cell pouch).  I have not used used cash since getting Garmin pay in 2020.

The waiter had absolutely no issue in using the card machine twice.

On the more regular rides with Maritz's classmate and his dad we take turns to pay.

After reading this entire thread, the problem seems less about how things are done, than who it is done with.

With people I don't know, we all sort ourselves out, especially if there are grossly different orders being placed.

With mates it really doesn't matter how we do things because we care about each other and wouldn't try screw anyone over. We are also happy to pay more every now and again because the friendship is worth more than an extra R50.

But for a random friend of a friend to expect me to pay for their booze- um, no.

A very awesome 95km ride was detroyed after a very unpleasant discussion about the bill, which I think was unecessary. Just wanted to get a feel of what the hub felt.

Post ride we got to where we parked, and went in to have a refresher. Five gents, two who do not drink alcohol. Two breakfasts (R120), one burger (R105), Lamb dish (R210) and a steak (R145). The alcohol split between the three ways (beers, tonic water, Jameson/Glenfidich) R256. Bill was R956, plus tip, R1056.

The problem came when the alcohol drinkers divided the bill 250 between the three of them, leaving R306 between the two non-drinkers. The comments after that went really sideways, and the day (in my view) was ruined.

Hubbers. How do you split post ride meals? What methods do you use? What is peaceful?

Just ask the waiter to work out the costs  separately or provide a bill for each persons portion, that’s how it works on planet Zug.

Without debating who is right wrong, morally or in principle, the ability to have a meal/drinks and split a bill without worrying exactly who had one is a privilege.

Here in Canada a server (waiter/waitress because everything must be gender neutral), brings the card machine and everyone pays for their own. Even when you clearly out on a date, the server asks to split the bill. To make it more shocking, the woman see this as normal.

When I’m on a date, bills on me. When I’m out with mates in SA, we would take turns to pay and because everyone is lekker, nobody would go wild when they weren’t on the hook for the bill.

This is what makes South Africans lekker, but South Africans also love to *ffff* *ssss* up. Sad!

Interesting. Why is it shocking?

Because in woke-world, feminists generally see chivalry as chauvinism. ‘How dare you  imply i cant pay for myself’

also, this thread is getting offtopic and is non cycling - turning into general chit chat about restaurant bills. The communists will be here soon 🥳

I don't think of it as woke at all. In the same way that I don't consider it shocking. Genuinely found it a pretty odd description.
Threads normally meander by page six anyway.

When I moved to hobbit-land I initially thought it was strange the way orders were placed and bills were split at restaurants and cafes etc.

Generally the service methods falls into 2 types:

  1. Order and pay at counter. Receive a table marker (or state table reference). Waiter brings food to you when ready. Some places have a more modern variation of this with QR codes on the table, with menus, ordering and payment via mobile phone. Overall individual ordering and payment on order is the more common method.
  2. Order from waiter. Pay bill at counter when leaving. State items ordered and they get checked off-the bill. Each person pays for what they ordered, or splits the bill by percentage (50/50 etc). This is more for finer dining. Not really the places one would go post ride.

Yes it does help that NZ isn't a tipping culture, which does simplify those incidents when a bill is split and some parties under-tip. But even so, with the above mentioned methods, any places that does have optional tipping, simply has it pop-up on the EFTpos/card machine, and most people just press "Skip", haha.

Here the general vibe is that people don't mind or get offended when itemising a bill and others only pay for what they ordered. Yes it adds a minute or 2 at "checkout" but I'm sure it has prevented many an argument or passive-aggressive thought between friends.

I actually like this. Makes it so much easier to live...

We just split it equally, but then we usually all order about the same thing - burger and beer or two; breakfast and coffee or two. Sometimes lose out a bit, sometimes win a bit.

But, if someone orders a steak and everyone else a burger then they are going to pay their fair share. Luckily I know the guys I ride with well enough that we can give each other ****, or tell someone to pay up without it becoming a thing.

I didn't know em that well-won't lie I was going to pay and move on but the other lad: Absolutely Not GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

Early May a friend and I did a 7 day unsupported ride from Prince Albert to Nieu Bethesda overnighting at various establishments as we we went along . I paid for the 1st night in advance so he paid for the second and me for the third so we went along never checking who paid how much .

Both happy . But the prerequisite for such an arrangement I suppose is that we are mates . The company is worth more than the difference in money .

clearly the was not the case with the OP.

definately not...😥

Never mind etiquette, that is theft. The money put down by others was meant for a specific purpose, this person then took from this for their own gain.

So thereby becoming a thief.

Just find yourself some rich, narcissistic cycling friends, they normally feel the need to exert their dominance and pay for everything, it's so much easier that way 😉

This is the best solution I've seen all post🤣

Something to that extent?

Actually, @nick will edit the thread. More like:

I can't understand why you're cutting the bill inaccurately, we barelyhad breakfast.

Not our fault you don't drink? (Laughs)

That's not it. Those who consumed the most should pay their share.

My man, if you cant afford your share you should have said so. In future, you can ask for a loan pre-ride not to create noise.

Who the **** do you think you are, talking to me like that?

And then down the hill it went. 🙈
