I was asked in Feb to join the Australian Team Staff for the Mixed TTT project and help out with the iTT for the event alongside the gentleman handling that.

As reference, the process, training, rider selection, data analysis, rider profile and meetings process over 6 odd months to get to the race day was really impressive. This is only for a Mixed TTT event. Yes, there were some limitations due to the even being the other side of the world but the protocols is how things should be within a federation, this is not about money as no money had been spent until the point of final team selection.

Yes sure money does then get into the picture as my flights, accommodation, day rate and prize money is paid for and being paid over from the results obtained but that is an add on from the pathway to there.

Being at the event and watching how this team of staff operate, was no different to being in UAE Team Emirates at any race. This also costs nothing to add structure and approach qualified and capable staff to execute their specific duties well. The costs then come after possibly as knowledge and skill does cost money. I understand this.

it can be done from CSA and there are staff around the world to fill these roles well but it will need to come from CSA and get them out their old way of doing things that I am sorry to say don't work. History has proven this. I am a South African in a Australian National team, when I asked why it was told simply I was the best person they felt for the job. Simple. So staff need to be qualified, not always a Nationality.

To send an athlete just because is not right, Australia did not have a U23 male rider who could finish top 10 in the TT. They did not send them, they took some backlash as its the home country and there would be no major expense but they weren't there to just send someone who will fill a spot. I completely understood that. this is also how it should be done.

When I saw the South Africans at the event, it does hit home, well for me it does and I did go over and say Hi whenever I could or add my small 2c in. It was great but to improve you have to be open to possible criticism and be open to and accept things are correct and make the changes.

Until that happens, nothing changes.

Sorry this landed up a long 2c.

John, its easy for CSA to just select riders and send them. They pay for everything themselves. So the only effort is putting a list of names on a piece of paper.

I received an email a month ago to say well done, you have been selected as part of the SA team to compete at World Masters track champs. Never mind the champs were 1 month away in the USA. You would never get a visa in time. Never prepare in time unless you were already planning on going.

And the email is the end of it. No further correspondence about process, clothing, nothing. Up to the rider to contact them and arrange everything. International licenses, kit etc. And pay for everything.

At least at Masters level no officials attend either 🙂

After a dry and sunny start to the week of racing for the time trials in Wollongong, the weather has moved in on the coastal city. There is a 100% chance of rain Friday and 80% for Saturday. - Cyclingnews

Varying lengths for the juniors (city circuit only) right through to the Elite men and women. Gonna be a buffet of racing over the next 3 days. Yummy yum!

so nice for spectators to see the racing come past a few times and during that, seeing how the race unfolds.

I see Pog touted as a winner. Will the bigger teams let him get away? If he does, he'll be a worthy winner.

It's hard to look past the big names on the start line - WvA is the biggest gun I think. MVDP hasn't had the best prep from the looks of it, but who knows? One thing's for sure, the time is probably passed where the big names look at each other while an (un)known rider (read: Bettiol) sails off into the sunset rainbow.

there are few sprinters in the startlist it seems, so there won't be a need to dump them on climbs, so the select group are going to know exactly what each other look like by the end of the day. who'll blink first?

Traditionally, Netherlands sports teams flatter to deceive. I suspect it'll be the same on Sunday.

Personally, I'd like the winner to be someone who gets to ride lots of races in the rainbow jersey, but if it's Grimay, I'm taking a week off to celebrate!

In the women's race, it's even tougher to pick - Italian Elisa's x2 vs Kopecky vs the Dutch V's - Vollering, Vos, Van Dijk and Van Vleuten. If it's a late break, I'm thinking Italian, if it's a bunch sprint, Kopecky and if it's a combined team-win, I'm picking the Dutch, but which one? If any team has it to win, it's the one in orange. Oh, and the locals will be hoping for Amanda Spratt. Will she make it? this time?

Like Dale said - yummy yummy!!!

I think you're referring to the ladies olympic road race.

I put R20 on Rota (who) at 150-1

stat attack.

With such a twisty and [cliche alert] punchy course, it could be really hard for teams to really assert their dominance.

but then you have the wout and remco two card trick. wva follows a break, does pog stay with remco or chase it down?

it could be a really exciting race.

MEN'S JUNIOR

What a sensational finalé on the wet roads! Lots of crashes too. No aerial attacks under the grey clouds; all the birds were saving their wings for the elite races.

not specifically her, but yeah.. that kind of thing, though it was exacerbated by the lack of radios. Anyone know if radios are permitted in the World's?

What's remco's form like after a stonking win in the Vuelta?

As for Pog - we've seen what happens when he's up against it and not away on his one in a one-day race - VDP showed him a nice clean pair of (the whitest) heels in both Strade and Flanders. IMO, against the best riders in those types of finishes, he's not winning.

is it just me, of does the men's world's this year feel like there's more on the line than in years gone by?

MEN’S u23

Another duo (WT experienced) makes it to the line in shiny roads conditions. Kazakhstan gets gold. And another medal (bronze) for Norway, yoh.

And at 38km we’ve already lost all our female cyclists off the back except Ashley.

Can CSA please stop sending riders that are not on the level.

It’s seriously embarrassing.

Pretty sure Hayley Preen was in there for at least 100km… got dropped because she got caught up behind a crash in the feed zone on a climb. Hayley is super strong, has been getting some experience racing over in Europe and the UK this season.
