A lot of people use Motor Oil for Lowers Service 5W30 and it works fine as a lubricant but it can cause Staining of Parts because it has Detergent Additives. Fork Oil for Motorcycles (15w) does not cause staining of Parts and also works fine as a Lubricant. Damper Oil is 5w or 3w depending on application. Depends on the fork. Fox in particular use the same oil in dampers and lowers on their older forks and on the damper side on their GRIP forks, Their 20W Gold is closer to machine slideway oil than anything else. Some RS forks use a 15W fork oil in the lowers, others use 0W30 motor oil. For lubing seals, whatever you use in the lowers is ideal, but basically anything without seal swelling additives will be fine. dasilvarsa

Motor Oil is much Darker. I also Trust all RockShox Lubricants from SRAM. Edited September 27, 2023 by dasilvarsa

I know of one I developed for a very specialised ( without the “z”) application. This was a bespoke lab blended product for a long stroke damper that was tuneable and had to last 20hrs. The reason is that the additives used to modify the viscosity can tend to gum up the damper circuit shims and valve orifices. So the better way to achieve a “multi grade “ performance is to blend two different base oils together. This then just gives the oil a wider viscosity index but in effect is still a monograde. I doubt SRAM have gone through the effort to develop a multi grade hydraulic oil. i24

Most bike branded suspension oil is just bought from another manufacturer and relabelled. RS 0W30 is most likely just relabelled Maxima 4 stroke motorbike oil. Jewbacca Posted September 27, 2023 Share Do you guys really clean your bikes after EVERY ride as described in the posts? Every single ride? Yoh..... I think I last cleaned my road bike the day before CTCT I mean I wipe the chain when I lube it and run a brush through the cassette every now and then, but yoh.... Switched to Shield car wash for the rest of the bike with no issues also use RSP hyper wiper after each wash and no issues. Sometimes i use the foam cannon with some snowfoam if the bike is dirty and busy washing the cars..... no hassles.

I've Read most Fork and Shock Suspension Manuals and Not one of them tells you to use Motor Oil in the Lowers. That's why I don't believe everything that is posted on the Internet I do my own Research and Testing on my own bikes. When I used 5w30 Motor oil on the RS I found that it attracted Sand to the Stanchions Made White parts Yellow and the Seals did not last. You can use Motor oil If you want. I will not use it on my own Bikes Forks and do not recommend using Motor Oil in the Lowers. I current use the full range of Motul Fork OIL Products and it's working for me and my NON Internet Friends. That is a LOT of cleaning haha, I surely don't. I do a once a month 10min wash and dry. Basic chain lube after. Will clean chain every 4 -6 months with actual chain cleaner. That is a LOT of cleaning Road Bike - If it doesn’t rain, then maybe every 2-3 weeks. I will give it a wipe off in between though. If it rains, bike is pretty filthy so immediate wash. MTB - After almost every ride especially this winter where it’s been terrible. If its dry you can ride for longer but I just prefer a clean bike versus a dusty one.
