I've been mtbing for 28 years, I recently got an eBike, with so many riders turning to the trails, what is the modern etiquette when an eBike catches a normal bike on a single track climb and likewise what is the etiquette a normal bike is caught by an eBike on a single track climb? I know what the unwritten rules were in the early days of mtbing.

Exactly the same as when a faster rider catches a slower one regardless of what kind of bike they on.

Except the analogue rider looks down his nose a little at the ebiker even while publically professing that all bikes are welcome. Also deep down inside he wishes he had one.

Mostly I hang back about 3 or 4 bike lengths.

I know I can blast by when the trail widens, though I seldom do this.

Before heading down a single track I take a moment to see who else is around .... I was mid.pack on downhills before, still is on the ebike.  So why dive in just before a potentially faster rider.

When a downhill has switchbacks, and I see I am being caught .... I find a safe spot and pull over, ideally before they loose time behind me.

Flip side ... many ebike riders are fast up and down .... many riders play nice and will let you pass.  Some just have toooo much testosterone to let anything on the trails pass them (irrespective of which bike they ride).  Smile and wait .... if you really are faster, there will be an opportunity soon enough.
