Stellenbosch:

Road

  • R304 at Kayamandi. Watch for people loitering along the road.

  • R44 at Cloetesville; particularly on weekends, watch for groups parked out under the trees.
MTB

  • Papegaaiberg.

I was attacked by a group of young kids this morning. R44 at Cloetesville flats. With some help I will try and turn this into a positive

So riding up Knorhoek road towards Simonsberg, I got bitten on the left leg by a feral dog, belonging to (I assume) farm labourers. Nothing for it but to call evac and go to ER for stitches and wound dressing. Keep an eye out if riding there. This happened about 400 - 500 metres from the R44 as I was passing a cluster of farm labourer cottages. The mutt in question is a medium sized black Border Collie cross. Aggro beast, that thing. The owner of the dog came to my aid, but he is in no position to cover costs. I let it slide with a stern warning to keep that dog chained up.

Same dog chased me late one afternoon. No bites, just a friendly warning to the dog.

What else must still happen before the authorities take action? Surely regular law enforcement at these hotspots are required.

If politicians cycled the issue would have been sorted.

No it won't.  Their bike rides would have been a group ride with about 20 armed body guards in black lycra on black bikes and blue flashing led lights on the handlebars pushing all other bike riders off the road.

So glad you're ok mate and you were lucky enough to come out with your bike and life intact.

Did he chuck the mobile maybe before they all caught him??

Ok now that that is out the way, PLEASE tell us you made him regret his decision??

Be on the lookout along Marine Drive My Citi bus/cycle route.

I was bike jacked at knife point this morning around 08:05 on my way to work into town. Just before the Woodstock bus stop coming into town underneath the bridge where the homeless people live. A tall local coloured chap shoulder charged me off my bike as I was travelling around 30km/h down the overpass under the bridge. Not great on road bike and took a tumble and before I could get my pepper spray out he was standing over me with a 9 inch blade in my stomach threatening to kill me. After giving him my rucksack and attempted to take my bike but luckily the chain had come off so he lost interest after a minute of trying to ride away with it.

To the 10 or more homeless people who live under that bridge and a few walkers by a huge thank you to them all as they chased and caught the guy, brought him back to me and gave me my rucksack back. A bit shaken up and hurt my knee from the fall but otherwise all ok and thankfully not stabbed. Only the mobile was not recovered. I reported it to the bus stop to call SAPS but they were so half asleep who knows if anything came of it.

Be alert when you're riding out there folks!

Hi Nobby

Really sorry to hear about your mugging. You have to go make the report yourself to the police station, and within 48 hrs please.

I stopped riding that stretch altogether when I am on my own. Very sadly, because it reduced my possible road routes by a huge margin and also put me in more traffic danger.  :(

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Hope the guy was arrested!

I use the same route when I commute to work and that is the stretch that I am most afraid of!  Are the metro police not suppose to patrol that route in the mornings and afternoon?

I don't get your point.

There are so many "hotspots" to be covered and so few staff.

Just be alert and you will be fine. Same goes for car robberies and hijackings. I have had to guns put in my face at traffic lights this year and had another few incidents.

Most of then, nay, all of then were a result om me not being vigalent. So it is what it is.

I don't get your point either.

So it's just acceptable to get two guns pointed in your face and ''have a few other incidents''

And then one day your luck runs out because violent crime just increases and increases.

It is your and my right to be able to move around without fear of being stabbed or shot or attacked.

Just as I've started using that route again...dammit! Sorry to hear of your ordeal, glad it ended mostly OK. Sucks though

Surely by now it's common knowledge to either a) not ride there alone, or b) avoid that stretch altogether.

I feel for nobbynic being jacked, but I don't see any other feasible solution. With the Western Cape not getting SAPS to play fair in terms of force expansion, cyclists are sadly not high enough on the list of importance, as the limited staff must spend their days chasing gangsters when not looking for train arsonists.

Cape Town currently has on average 1 SAPS personnel for 540 people. The national average is 1:360. (I read these stats earlier this week, but could be out by 10 or 20 people, but know that I am close to the official figures).
