Call me naive, but I miss the days when people could simply enjoy things without always adding a 'but'.

Did you have a good ride?

'It was good, but.. could have been ...

😂 Without anyone saying but you'd still be riding a boneshaker bicycle.

The boneshaker is nice but some way to propel it better would be rad.

The penny farthing is nice but too many OTBs

The clunker is nice but ...

😉 But yeah, I hear you.

  2. The commentary is pretty good, to be fair. Go watch the British Olympics MTB feed if you want to set the bar on monotony. 😴

Neil rambles on and reiterates the same point several times over. I can imagine a producer somewhere slicing a hand across throat to get him to shut up for a little. But he does have good stats, in spite of the child-man-splaining.

Annika is brilliant. Love her insights.

Gerald is pretty good. He knows the areas and trails and passes along a lot of useful info to those of us who haven't wines and whaled.

Sure it would be fun to have some true nutcase (what was the name of that Portuguese rider a few years ago?) doing some commentary and saying some weird things but we really have little to complain about (and camera footage – heli and e-bikes – is very good for the terrain and available logistics). And they work pretty well as a team.

Claudio only gets excited when Mr Min unexpectedly nails a sector to go green (granted, that's always entertaining, but it ain't gonna happen in marathon racing). 😅

I see Scott-Sram are riding with Cape Epic specific Aspens, explains why they have had better luck so far this year. Wonder if they will make them available to public in the future?

Don’t they always (XCO included) ride custom Maxxis tyres (in spite of the markings that suggest they are off the shelf)?

    She is tough!

Let's hope she leaves the rest of the field in her wake.

She must be to finish with that gash.

Judging by the photo doing the rounds – which appears to be real – I'd be very surprised if she manages to finish the race. Cr*p luck with her and Lill riding so well.

    Racetec are the worst.

I remember the days when results were available within minutes of finishing

Ha, ha, ha. You must be young. I remember having to wait 2 weeks and buying a newspaper to find out how slow we rode. No bike computers, no gels, no recovery shakes and most importantly no electric scooters. And even unseeded riders got start in the dark (and the roads were empty). 😉

Substantial budget to properly package a live stream for any race unfortunately. Will have to wait in Epic and World Cup Series 😬

That's true. They'll need a commentator, some media chaps with cameras and microphones and a helicopter.

    Uh, hang on ...

    😅

In all fairness I have no idea what the mileage was out of the earlier attempts for live broadcasting, I can only imagine they had far more peeps watching the teenager clips on social media. I'll just have to go fly my own bloody helicopter there and see what happens. 😜

  7. Here we are again. Wondering what on earth is going on.

Did they start at 1500 today? Who knows. Struggling to understand why a medical aid company or a whatever it is the other company sells would give so much money for so little publicity in return? Not much happening on social media either.

Any insights into the race appreciated. 🤷‍♂️

  8. A different perspective, and refreshing that the author is transparent about his friendship with CS. It’s long-form journalism, and it did raise a handful of new details for me (bear in mind the limitations of what can be said before Armstrong’s case has played out). I thought it was okay and worth the time to read.
I haven’t read Outside content for several decades - since long before they had a web presence, in print - so cannot comment on the quality of Before vs Present. But thanks for your thoughts on this either way.

Just saw a post on my strava feed about a bikejacking that took place this morning close to the airfield.  From what I can gather bakkie pushed rider off the road then grabbed the bike and sped off.  🤬

Saldanha airfield? (Or the air force base?) Time?
