Another manager meets his fate at st Mary’s.

Just surprised levy took so long.

Well, if you can't beat Southampton, then are you really even a manager... (grabs coat)

ok- what they don't say in that table is that they must be ASA or other running governing body events. Ruling out trail running.

Also take and event like Kaapsehoop marathon, which can count as your qualifier. You can probably trip on your laces and roll down the hill to the finish and still qualify. The route drops nearly 1km over the 42km, basically it is down the escarpment all the way to Nelspruit with a slight speedbump near the end. The route literally could not count as a world record because it is too easy. Because it has a massive elevation net loss, and is a point to point race where the start is more than 50% of the distance away from the finish. So the easiest marathon ever can count, but all 100Milers do not count because they are not ASA affiliated. This is not merit based qualifications in my opinion.

That was kinda what I was trying to say in my initial post which kicked it all off a bit. My thought was just try massage the dates or locations to make it a more consistent event. It would also make the organisers lives a bit easier long term and safer for the team in general. Nevermind the athletes, the poor lifeguards in the water taking in buoys and setting them out, boats etc.

I always do wonder why there is this massive resentment towards the road running scene from Trail runners... I do both, enjoy both and am equally useless at both, but I clearly missed the secret handshake or blood oath somewhere along the line.

Yes ASA are pretty useless, as per pretty much all government linked entities, but a license for the year is small fry (R120) in the grand scheme of things and we've got the most incredible and well supported calendar and some truly world class events. Clubs organize races, keeping entry costs lower, giving everyone access to safe, supported runs - then those race fees build the clubs up, allowing them to support their more talented runners, creating a strong local running scene and a wonderful diverse and inclusive running culture.

And where road running is a million miles ahead of trail, is exactly in this regard... diversity and inclusivity. If there is any sport that needs to take a good long look at itself, it's trail running. The entry fees are out of hand and the diversity about on par with Orania.

And Kaapsehoep, I am guessing you haven't run it... but it sucks as a run for most normal folk. Running downhill for hours becomes highly unpleasant, which funnily enough makes it a pretty darn good qualifier especially on years such as this one.

Apologies for the thread hijack everyone else

I've also been sidelined since March after having Viral Meningitis and nearly dying.

3 lumbar punctures, 7 days in ICU and a fairly lengthy recovery process this year has seen me tentatively put my shoes on again recently.

I can't put the body under stress, so I've managed a few slow, easy 5km trail runs with the dog.

Been a rough year, but things are healing and coming on nicely. I still have some quite serious vision issues in my left eye where the swelling of the brain pushed against the optic nerve, but it's getting better slowly.

Hoping to be back running freely and fit by this time next year!

Jeepers dude, that is seriously hectic... terrible bloody thing meningitis, had a friend lose a child to it overnight. Glad you made it and are on the mend - a lesser person may well not have.

I'm sure I join everyone on here in wishing you a full recovery - always enjoyed your crazy antics and views.

Define AVG Runner? I don't think you can equate anybody just finishing comrades or an ultra to a specific time on a 10k. You don't need to be any better than and avg runner to run a silver comrades. You have to be a better than avg runner to run a silver oceans. Finishing comrades or an ultra doesn't make you an avg runner. You can jog your way to a 5h marathon and walk the rest of the way and finish comrades before the cut off.

I feel that an avg runner should be able to get very close to a silver comrades and at worst no slower than 8:30. Running 5m/km isnt that hard with some training, its a mindset that people create barriers around. Do the training - like you are for the 10k - and suddenly it is doable to run a decent ultra not just finish. Sun 37m 10k is a decent time but not unachievable for the avg runner if they put in the training. You aint going from running 40+ minutes to sub 37 off 8 weeks of training.

This may be controversial, but that is my view.

Got a mate that is between 95-100kg that went from running maybe 30k a week and not able to break 34 minutes for a 8k, to a sub 3 marathon and running regularly in and around 37 min 10k. It took him 12 months of training - and he trained hard with a good programme - and still weights over 90kg. I don't call him anything other than an avg runner.

I agree with much of what you say... but I also think you're so not average that it shifts the goal posts quite a bit! A 90kg unit that can run a 37minute 10km is not remotely average in my books. That's a proper athlete, and if he was better built for running and something in line with 75/80kg's, he'd be shaving off a good few more minutes no doubt.

You and Ferret running Comrades again? Sorry I've been a bit out of the loop

Think it was somewhere on here someone mentioned how the euro's focus on shorter distances etc.

I am targeting a 10km pb and boy oh boy is the training physically more painful than any of the training I have done before. Training for a hundred miler hurts, but this is different.

It got me thinking though- I reckon finishing a 100 miler/comrades/100km/ultra is more doable for the average runner than doing say a 37min 10km? Your thoughts?

Definitely - I've said it before, I believe anyone can run Comrades, and I absolutely mean everyone. To run 3:40/km for 10km requires an engine that many people don't have I'm pretty sure...
I'd guess not even half of the population could reach that level due to physical limitations. You can of course work on improving all the different metrics, but some people just aren't athletes - never were, never will be.

I do find all the views interesting though... especially from the guys at the sharp end who I think maybe are so far down the road they don't know what average looks like anymore :)

As an interesting anecdote... I remember a friend of mine struggling his way to Comrades and bitching to his trainer about how his fitness just wasn't where he wanted it, and his trainer reminded him that even though he's had a poor training build up, he's easily going to finish Comrades and that put's him likely well within the the 1% fittest people in the world.

The bar for average these days is so low sadly... I think the average person can't run 3km full stop, probably has a body fat% in the mid to high 20's and a resting heart rate of nearly 70

In Comrades metrics, I reckon a Bill Rowan anyone can achieve if they really put in the hard yards - a silver is another whole chestnut in my books.

  6. Battle for 4th shaping up very nicely... going to be a cracker of a North London Derby
Spurs really need to do everything possible to keep Conte

Kane in absolutely ridiculous form so far this year, even if he doesn't score, his passing has gone next level.

And really would love Eriksen back at Spurs next year - was always a great player and exactly the sort of creative player we need for when teams park the bus

    Spurs to win the league!!!

Only if we play City every week... 😆

Jeepers Everton were terrible, I thought Frank would get them going, but honestly that was probably the worst performance I have seen from any team in the league. Proper relegation level football... they need to wake up fast

  8. Spurs to win tonight... read an interesting stat, when Conte has 6 days to prep the side for a game, we've won 7 out of 8 and drawn the other.
Points to a lack of depth and conditioning likely?

I am struggling to find a justification for sacking OGS when they did.

Coz what they’ve done since, can hardly be described as improvement...

Great result though, for the others with top4 aspirations

Edit: Is it just me, or does anyone else think ManU are just trying to be too Spursy.... 🤔

It takes decades and decades of dedication to be Spursy...

Utd are pants and rudderless. Not sure what the problem there is, but they clearly have a few.

You don't buy Ronaldo when you have 4-5 very promising attackers in the ranks and much lower grade midfielders. Fred and McTominay are not Champions League level, heck, they're barely premier league quality.
You compare their squad with City's these days, and I don't think a single United player makes the starting line-up at City. And it's not like United don't have money, they just don't spend it well and generally pay over the odds.

We should just be thankful that cycling at the highest level is clean now. Not a single case in 2021.

Amen... they're all clean, it's a miracle! Praise baby jesus

Luckily all the reformed dopers still intricately involved with all the teams and in control of most of the licenses, sponsors etc are there to show all the kids how to keep it clean.

  11. I've bought and sold plenty over the years... generally I deal with people with some track record and even on the very odd occasion something does go a little wrong, things generally get sorted out amicably.
An early one was a carbon Raleigh I bought for a mate as a present together with this wife for his 40th.... was sold as 'one careful lady owner' - only to turn out to have been Mannie Heymans race bike. Seller actually had also been duped a bit, as he was getting the parts, but ended up with him paying for a full respray of the bike and it served it's owner well for a good decade in the end.

I'd say the most common mistake people make is grabbing a 'bargain' second hand groupset... 8 out of 10 times it's getting upgraded for a reason. Unless it really does have low mileage - treat it as a consumable. Shifters and RD's it's often really tricky to tell how much use they've had.

Also sold a set of wheels once that I got on a bike I bought and stripped - kept the frame and flogged the rest... the wheels were very slightly out of tune, but sold them stating as much, only to find out they couldn't be tuned as the spokes had fused to the rims. Refunded the buyer in full in the end, but it was a bit of a time waste for everyone.

Like most things in life, communicate, be honest and things will generally get resolved.

And if you do encounter an unremorseful douche in the classifieds, please for the sake of everyone, drop them a rating

if you compare the pricing right now on the 6 vs the 7 the 6 is already comparatively quite a lot cheaper.

i would not expect any additional drop in price

They will probably try keep the pricing in line, but reality always dictates that many re-sellers will clear their 6's to stock 7's - and we all score.

It's happened every time. And like you say, even if it doesn't, the pricing of the 6 for how it stacks up against the 7... it's really not worth the extra cash in my books.

Absolutely love my Fenix 6 - the battery life if awesome and it holds up ridiculously well to the endles whacks it enjoys in being worn daily. Mines still spotless a year in, you can't ask for more

if anyone on the hub is getting in stock please hit me a PM i want

The trick is to buy the Sapphire 6 when it's price drops as the 7 comes out...
The 6 is already a ridiculously wonderful piece of kit that ticks every box and some.

But we also know you don't listen Scalpel Joe 🤐
