Agreed, though finding one of those with an original engine is like finding gold in the middle of the atlantic.

 

Another good motor to put in there is the scooby 2l / 2.5l, and guys have also put audi / vw v6's and GTI motors to get a bit more reliable power out of them.

 

My choice (long term) at the moment is between one of these:

The 4x4 Syncro ones have developed a bit of a following over the years. The 1 time I drove one on dirt roads in Namibia, it impressed me a lot.
