I am guessing probably closer to 70/80 foot, but it could also look so big due to the long lens effect when taking pictures. For example, when taking a pic of Table Mountain from Bigbay using a longish lens of say 300mm, the mountain always has the illusion of being closer than it is, making it look bigger.

 

But still, there is a reason no one is paddling for the take-off...

My guesstimate is around 50 foot, but then again what do I know!! I have been told I have no clue as to how to measure a wave. He was right tho, The way I measure is not even closely resembled to the 2 stds used. Infact, I only look at the face of the wave between the crest and just before the bottom.

But yes, I know what you are referring to with the illusion.
