"You will have to demonstrate that you reasonably believed that your life was threatened‚ that you were going to die if you didn’t defend yourself. You have to really believe that your life was in danger."

newspapers are not the best sources of interpretation when it comes to the law as it doesn't create enough sensationalism for them......

And if they come into your house at night, fall aver your coffee table and break a leg, they can sue you, because they got injured on your property.

Or You come home after work, and 2 gentleman are helping themselves to your wife...... You are according to what is being said here, not allowed to help her, because your life is not in danger.

Force can be use to protect third parties.

Like i said, the only way you will get away with self defence is if the person physically harms you. You can do nothing if they on your property. Trying to prove you are innocent with very little evidence is gonna be real hard.

The State has to prove you guilty beyond a reasonable doubt - you do not have to prove you are innocent.

what if they dont attack you but also just carry on helping themselves to your possessions? seeing that they know you cant do anything about it?

You are allowed to defend your life and property. So you would be allowed to use reasonable means to stop them stealing and prevent them leaving until the cops private security force arrive. Shooting an unarmed person who is not physically assaulting you would not be regarded as reasonable IMO.

The f-word - in Afrikaans or Irish, it's inoffensive, funny and expressive.
