seriously considering an entry level trainer for these weeks .... dammit, have I become a cycling addict ...    :whistling:

you could also just get an inexpensive single speed commuter and a decent rain jacket :P

Just bought a cotic solaris max frame. Gonna build a lekker mtb commuter. Something about a 29er HT. With the right tekkies, I think ittle be a nice alternative option to the cotic escapade. Switch things up.

Okay... not my finest moment or a great way to start the day. So this morning on my commute in to work I got hit by a car. Despite wearing a high-vis jacket and being lit up and following a car around a circle in a dedicated cycle lane, this mornings motorist didnt want to stop entering the circle and hit me from the side/rear trying to squeeze behind the car I was following around the circle. She claimed the sun was in her eyes and didnt see me.

Im fine albeit slightly shook up and I did a bike check while she was there and my bike seemed fine at the time as well. So I said its fine in not the happiest tone and we went our ways. Except I now notice my rim is slighly bent and my hub has got some very minor play.

This topic is called... Things Ive learnt while Commuting. Today I have learnt that even if you are in shock and everything seems okay. Get the persons details (I did not for which I am an Idiot) because now I have to try and get my rear wheel fixed on the only bike I own and I definitely do not have the budget to do this at the moment . FFS.

Dammit! that's horrid.

Glad to hear you're physically ok. Just be careful of obsessing over the incident and replaying all of the different ways the scenario could have played out. It can lead to unresolved anger issues.

Remember it was not your fault.

Low winter sun is a real hazard.

I learnt this lesson 6 weeks ago

I also did not take down details of the motorist that hit me. So far I am out pocket to the tune of R6k for medical and bike repairs. I was in a lot pain and shock but I still had the opportunity to get her details. Whether she would have paid anything to me is a moot point now.

This is what im most grateful for... and very grateful I am indeed... as most of us know that any encounter with a car has the potential to end really badly. As frustrating as it is I am very happy to be fixing a wheel rather than broken bones.

What wheel is it ?  Size etc ?

Just maybe a Hubber has one hanging in the garage to keep you going until yours is fixed ?

PS - I am having serious withdrawel symptoms from not commuting this week.  Just did not want to try my luck in the dark, combined with groggy  drivers in the rain ....

JIP !

I commute at or before 6:00 in the morning ... so VERY dark during the winter months.  But at least the roads are still reasonably quiet.

Add a bit of rain and the traffic just gets absurd !!

Due to the dry winter I have still been racking up a few commutes most weeks.  But right now I am suffering serious withdrawel symptoms !!

Glad you ok. Always try and lookout for other vehicles. Drivers seem to lose the little brains they have, add some rain or cellphone, and it can becomes chaos very fast.

As said above, post what size wheel you have and I am sure someone may be able to help!

  • 4 weeks later...

So this morning while commuting in the rain I learned that the white paint on pavement curbs are extremely slippery when wet.

Twice....

Now sitting at work nursing some bruises and can't wait to cycle back home in my wet, cold & muddy cycling kit

Not the best of commuting days for me!
