I am having a bit of a problem with socializing Stella. Cape Town has a parvo virus epidemic at the moment and the vet says that a puppies' own immunity from vaccination cannot be fully trusted until they have had their third round of shots at about 15 weeks. Until that time it is not advised to visit parks frequented by lots of dogs or for her to come into contact with people who are likely to have contact with un-vaccinated dogs.

My worry is that we may miss the boat with getting her used to people, dogs, cars, bicycles and all kind of strange noises so that she is not fazed by it later on.

I cannot keep her at home and too isolated, but I also don't want to endanger her.

Anyone with advice?

My dog (boxer) has had parvo - we nearly lost him. After an expensive and gut wrenching week at the vet he just just made it out. It was honestly one of the worst weeks I've ever had. My advice - keep her isolated. Socialising is not going to mean anything if she is not alive to socialise...

We kept our second pup (black lab) isolated for a long time because of the first pup getting parvo - she has been socialised just fine :)

Would eg gun club have meets with older dogs who are all clear that you could attend with some long suffering older labs?

I used a sound effects app with Enzo..

I wouldn't take a chance taking her out amongst other dogs while there is virus going around .

Maybe take her to a school sports day..to get used to people and all different kinds of sounds?

Valid concern you have - we were chatting to our Dog Trainer at puppy school and she said that the first 4 months of a puppy's life are the most important - they generally run around and are not phased by anything so the time to teach them the good habits is during that time.  After 4 months, they begin to get more attentive to sounds and reactions and that's when the bad habits start.  We were right on the limit with Lucy - but it goes without saying that 4 months in a cage at the SPCA didn't do her any good.

What was also very interesting is that she said you can teach old dogs new tricks - right up to around 13 years of age.  But its almost impossible to unlearn those bad experiences they might have had.

Our wee dog is in pretty bad shape at the moment. Low red and white blood cell count and weak as anything. Vets have tried everything to diagnose and we now await results of a blood marrow test. Considering a blood transfusion at the moment but just spending as much time with him as we can.

Thanks lad, first blood transfusion (at £700 per bag) tomorrow, which should give them a bit more time to identify what’s causing his low red blood cell count. Poor boy is part of our family.
