Cramers Coffee is corner of Harrison and Main, basically.

Agree about the hectic cycling in town. I only ever commute just before Christmas when roads are quiet.

Cramers hope to open on Sundays soon, so that could make it a viable stop on a ride.

Thanks, I know where that is now. Often going via that area motoring and in need of a decent coffee, no Seattles down that way.

Downtown Jhb is certainly not the place to cycle for many reasons, HECTIC!  I was going from doing a chore in Sellby to Jhb North, best is to go via Fordsburg from Marshalltown and avoid downtown / Braamfontein, though Marshalltown is okay, just dont go on any roads which have that dump phuck Ria Viva system!

You miss the point of the Ria Via system.

Their routes make great bike lanes !

I take Commissioner, then I think it is Rissik up to Braamfontein and the civic centre and also down Empire as far as beyond RAU.

Great surface with no traffic. Excellent !

Well assuming you don't ride in those lanes, its a death wish / certain suicide for cyclist, even hell in a motor vehicle, I avoid those roads entirely.

That's the thing that really bothers me: taking up most of the road for dedicated bus lanes (which are barely utilised) the rest of the traffic is squeezed on to narrow lanes on the sides.

One would think a realistic and objective study would have been down on the efficacy of the 1st phase before 'roll out" on to the likes of Louis Botha but no.. they carry on regardless and make a bad situation even worse. Why?

- People making the decisions are detached from reality and focused on idealistic unpractical unworkable grand social engineering schemes ah la Soviet Union style

- Grand public works schemes under the guise of "empowerment"

- Too much money changing hands - kick backs, palm greasing etc

- Lobbying by the Civil Eng industry (often said to be the most corrupt after the Arms Industry)

Sounds a bit like the rest of the country doesn't it.

Agree, serious waste of road-space, which is why i DO ride my bike in them. No ways would I ride anywhere else.

Dumb question time....is it prohibited to ride a bike in those lanes?

On one of the Jozi Freedom Rides I did a year or two back, we rode into Soweto on a road or roads with Rea Vaya lanes. Some guys, especially people on road bikes, nearly came badly a cropper when they unexpectedly went over the bumps in the road.
