Hi all Hubbers,

I have a question with regards to Drafting during a MTB race, although we generally don't get many long stretches of road in a MTB event, you do get them, my question is with regards to drafting ie are you allowed or not allowed to ride behind the guy in front in an attempt to reduce the wind, same as a peleton in road racing?

Much appreciated for any feedback :-)

For Sure.. if you can stick on someones wheel or in a pack, go for it... just remember the guys wont always warn re holes\rocks etc as on the road....I try to warn guys, but not everyone else does... so be awake...

It is definitly a grey area in mountain biking. If each person takes turns leading out, thats fine with me and actually helpful. But I have experienced that wheels-suckers creep behind you on a long dirt road for 10km, only to rush to pass you before the next singletrack section.

Meh, unless you are a podium contender it shouldn't bother you.

But I do however feel that putting Tri-bars on a mountain bike and drafting behind a mate should generally not be allowed. (Transkaroo, Namib Quest, Tankwa Trek)

I always laugh at my GF when she complains about the oomies that sit in her slip when racing.

Everyone generates an air pocket behind them, not just you. It doesn't cost you anything to create it. If someone sits in your slip, it doesn't endanger you and it doesn't make you slower.

My view on slip streaming in racing (MTB and road) is: Do your part when you can*, use what's available to you, THINK.

*If every A batch rider in the 94.7 (or Argus for that matter) did ONLY 1 minute at the front of the pack, they'd be over the finish line before everyone had a chance at the front.

Yip.....do it.....and assume the risks involved. Small rocks, dust, mud and the odd tard in the face are the least of your worries.......it is the boulders, ditches, holes, tree branches, inability to maintain a line, sudden stopping, etc. that you need to worry about. So if the race and conditions allow for a bit of wheel sucking.......go for it!

No problem drafting in an MTB race as long as you help out in front as well, joined a 2 man team in one Buffet Olives MTB Race and we took turns in front for the last 20km, definitely moved us way up in the GC. However last 1km it's every man for himself :P

I can't sit slip when I ride offroad. I need to see where I am going (rocks, bumps and holes)!

I let people sit in my slip on my terms and conditions. My slip, my pace and I don't inform you of minor obsticals. You may sit as long as you want.
