wattbikes at virgin - fitness test

These guys don't own any spd cleated shoes. Sure not going to put them on their special track shoes either! Rugby teams gets all sorts of special treatments at the gym... why cant the SA Track Sprint team get some sort of "special treatment" too? Virgin Active didn't even want the German Track Team (holding the Team Sprint World Record) train there for free!! While overseas rugby teams get to train there for free!

*Not trying to argue with you guys though!

What special treatment? Also how big is the team as most gyms only have 2 or 3 bikes. No gym has a rugby field, they use weights and other apparatus to compliment their field training sessions. Also not trying to argue but really don't understand what point you are trying to make?

Not Trying to argue either, but then they should buy a set of SPD cleated Shoes, SA Track Team or Not, if the general public start seeing them changing pedals every tom dick and harry will be bringing there LOOK pedals etc and With "Joe Public" winding them on and off those crank arm threads will be cross-thread and wrecked within a week.

Just too bad that Virgin Active Tygervalley doesn't allow the SA Track Sprint Squad to use their own pedals on the Wattbikes! They need to use own pedals as they strap their feet to the pedals to prevent them from pulling out as the produce 2200+ watts!!

2200....for real? I still want to see that in real life.....

For me as a skinny ass fit cyclist anything over 1500 is fairy tales.

Maybe Chris Hoy is in Cape Town?

Do you blame them? Not worth the risk. What if with all the on and off the crank is striped?

Also a bit of a schlep.

So I've seen 1 of the big SA track boys pushing an average of 1500 watts over a 15 second sprint on 1 of the Cycleops bikes at Cadence...whilst clipped in with standard SPD's...not sure how many watts he peaked at but at no point was there a worry that his feet would unclip. So I'd love to know where all this has come from?

the 1 chap is only 19years old and pushes 2146watts, come to the track someday and see what these guys can do.

So I did my 45 minute all-out test today...

256W average

Makes one realize how much better the pro's are. I think Tony Martin did 407W average for the last hour of the stage that he won in the first week, and that was after 4 hours in the saddle!!!

Understand top sprinters like Kittel get to 1800-2000 Watt at top power. Top speed skaters routinely get to 2000+. Either way all more than 3x I have ever done

Apparently, the new national fitness manager guy is big into cycling so this could be one of the new initiatives. I heard that there'd be a few revisions to spinning as well. Could be interesting...

I see that a number of virgin gyms (bryanston, old eds, victory park to name a few) have recently aquired wattbikes which is awesome!

Seeing this is my first opportunity to do power based training, my goal is to find a general fitness "test" that one can do to test your form / progress periodically? I'm hoping that this could help me measure progress and perhaps estimate your race times.

As a first attempt I'm going to try a 45 minute balls to the wall ride this week and record average power. Aiming for 250W.

Any other (perhaps less boring) ideas?

Knew I was supposed to do Endurance yesterday but never checked my programme, so thought about your comment. Just made the 250 Watts over 45 min. Can feel my legs a bit today, I must say it is almost shocking to see how your pwer dips over a period of an hour and then to think of Tony Martin that can produce so much over such a long period.

Did the 3 min test the Watt bike site says you should do, 412W. Was hurting for a bit afterwards.

Yes in the first 30 seconds it is not so bad but in the last 30 seconds my avg went down quick.I guess it only shows I am unfit at the moment.

Must say do not know how the guys get up to 1500Watts peak, sitting down.

Will be taking slip from you when in the Cape.
