I think the emotions will gain momentum towards Sunday...this could be an epically memorable ride, the one Argus you'll never forget. Standing together in the wake of all the destruction - and heroism of untold many faceless people.

Go Cape Town!

No, there is lots they could do. This is a cop out, a very big cop out.

As Blackbeard said on another thread - there should have been a plan route C, D and E.

Hell they could have sent us for a 50km ride down the n7 and back. or the N2 frikken heck.

Here is how I see it - Yes, we can do some generic ride up the N7, N2, northern suburbs, winelands whatever - to make up 110km, but if it doesn't involve the peninsula it just isn't the Argus. And given the wide range of fires there just ain't any other options.

Sometimes life happens when you plan other things.

I feel really sorry for the okes flying in from all over though, we just have to make the most with what we are dealt with.

There is 3 of us, driving down as I type. We are 200 km from home, 1300 from Cape Town. Turning back didn't even cross our minds. We won't miss this for nothing. I think it's gonna be awesome.

And WE WILL WELCOME you here dudes! Looking forward to sharing the spirit that will be the lasting memory of this years ride. Years from now, when many other people have become cyclists and competed in this event, the question will be, "Did you ride the first year of the CTCT when the fires ravaged the mountain and the race still went on!"

Lets not forget that there's a strong possibility the fire could still be burning when we line up to do this ride! Wear something red if you have it, as a token of support to the firemen still working the mountain!

Wow, Slowbee, this is the most angry I have ever seen you! :)

I have been thinking a few days it would have to be cancelled (or at least shortened very significantly). I would love a gentle meander up the R27 like the West coast Express, and back down the N7 maybe, but every option involves a National Road, and that will just never happen.

Like I just said, I just expected so much more, but not this. And the wife just hit me with the frying pan and has taken me on with my comments as well!

Tell you what and I have re read the statement from the trust again, if the cycle trust truly thinks this should be a solidarity ride, they should make a significant donation of entry money to the fire fighters or the wildfire services.

And I really want you guys to take me on with this - but I cannot get out my head two things from the statement.

1. There never was an alternative route planned, other than always going down the peninsula (the notable absence highlights this)

2. It has now gone to far into "chasing money"

That said - I will be on the start line, in my seeding group. And just amble along as always. And just as chirpy. Maybe Thor you sprint the first lap and join me for a champers breakfast before I do my first lap ?

*Edit: I will have my own bottle of champers in the bag and a glass cause if I find a firefighter I will have a drink with them*

What happened to the ALTERNATIVE ROUTE?  This is not an alternative route ,but merely a shortened route.

It was never foreseen that 3 our of the 4 possible roads could be knocked out at the same time, as said earlier, this is a once in a lifetime disaster. Moving to a completely different area like the West Coast cannot logistically be done in 3 days, not for a ride of this size. Sad as it is, the decision has been made.

Arrogant ? Intolerant ? Please explain why you see those in my comments Davem?

More a case of I expected more of the cycle tour trust ?

Cop out, lack of planning, cowardly...

We are all disappointed. Some of choose to believe the organisers did their best to organise a different race for 35000 people in three days. You seem to think you know better.

I don't want to get into a fight with you. Read your comments in the morning, you may feel differently.

I think we should all be grateful that the City of Cape Town is still making this event possible! People are putting their lives on the line so you and me can be safe and protect us from disaster. If you are proudly South African you will embrace this race and see it as a special event that will not be repeating itself soon. To all the good positive cyclists-be safe & ENJOY!

Where is it ok to ride in Cape Town and surrounds?! I've paid for plane tickets - car hire - hotel accommodation - bike transportation. I'm gonna make it worthwhile come flames, ash, damaged roads, smoke inhalation .... Bla bla bla

Come do the ride and if you still feel like riding your bike after, than go past the finish and ride into Hout Bay and back!

Plenty of other super scenic areas in CT too!

Some ouks here need to go play some netball.

This is the first time in more than 20yrs the race is going to be shortened. If its your first time, well tough, that part is your fault, you missed out of many years of good organisation .

Like having some twat ride your derailler off, things happen. Get over it.

Support the race, support the people battling to save lives and property. Support the City of Cape Town for standing together.

Most of all enjoy the ride after watching the Stormers thrash the Sharks :)
