One of the chaps I know completed 9 Comrades Marathons in the same pair of running shoes with plenty of other running in the same pair.

So much of today is just increasing sales...or I was never fortunate to grow up in an era of decent quality products.

Listening to Lindsay Parry recently, he did acknowledge that one could get a couple thousand kays out of older shoes in the past but that due to the technology arms race in current shoes, this just isn't feasible. I'd never dismiss the "engineered redundancy" from brands but given how light and responsive running shoes have become (and the modern runner's expectations of such) I can understand why the performance foams don't last as long.

I mean, look at this thing. If there was a nuclear holocaust the cockroaches would be wearing these 1990 Asics GTs.

If you've battled with hip bursitis for almost a year how are you gonna get it sorted in the next 2 weeks if I may ask?

Anti inflam, ice pack morning and night and go back to doing the exercises the physio gave me! I stopped doing them when I started cycling because the riding was helping.  So now instead of the problem starting from early on in the run, it kicks in around the last 3km..but I need to get back to managing it.

I had this sometime in the late 90’s (1990’s)

Still niggles every once in awhile, but found that ITB type stretches where you focus on the hip help a lot, for example the one where you stand and lean forward slightly and to the side with your feet crossed over and weight on the foot of the side you stretching....

I have what feels like bursitis, but if I do some digging in my hip I can feel that its my it band. If I press on the right spot it refers right down to the knee. Like you said, some itb stretches and foam rolling works wonders. Lunges and bridges to strengthen that whole area also helps.

I find that I have a asymmetric running style, so if the shoes start wearing, my right leg starts up with silly pains like this.

The best exercise my physio gave me was to stand with hands on my hips on one leg, raise the other leg up, bent at the knee at 90 degrees and hold for 3 mins, then change over.  You will feel the tendon that runs from the front of the hip (groin area) will work hard and strengthen.  It is connected to ITB.  The other was to put one leg on a small low table behind you,  a kettlebell in each hand and lower them to the ground by bending the leg that is still on the floor and keeping your back upright.

They really work well.

Same here. Just finished a course of cortisone, anti inflam and plenty ice packs. This added to the stretching exercises the quack gave me worked a treat.

After some decent rest theres still a niggle in the left hip when i run but just a small irritation.

Did a 130km ride on Saturday (all off road) and didnt feel a thing....go figure!!

Anyone in JHB go to the Karkloof preso last night?

Sad I didn't, wife and I have been putting some real thought into doing the 50 miler later this year..

I considered going, but went for a run instead last night, will definitely be running 100 miler later in the year though...
