RABUBI Posted June 20, 2019 Posted June 20, 2019 I might think about it - came off World Duathlon champs last year with a 39min PB for the (shorter!) 10km run so thought I was the bees-knees when I lined up for my first 4km race. Got my ass royally handed to me. And for the next 3 or 4 races I got properly schooled. So have a bit of unfinished business there.... I did CC last at school, now in 40-44 category, so looking forward to this. doing the 8k
dave303e Posted June 20, 2019 Posted June 20, 2019 In other news, I see Paul Tierney is on record pace for his attempt on the 214 peak Wainwright record...

Jackes Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 I know it is relative and I guess I should go and fit them to see for myself, but what is the most popular/best size running backpacks to go for? I guess mostly will just be water, phone, nutrition, but there will be the odd race where there needs to go an extra jacket or so in aswell. https://www.takealot.com/aonijie-withwind-5l-waistcoat/PLID52292622https://www.takealot.com/aonijie-6l-waistcoat-in-blue/PLID45065386https://www.takealot.com/aonijie-windrunner-10l-size-m-l/PLID52292615 Pulse 1

Jackes Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Salomon is have a sale on some of their packs https://salomonsports.co.za/collections/mens-trail-running-packs Thanks, I've seen them. Unfortunately they still don't come close to the price of the Aonijie. I get those Takelot prices -25% as well. ScottCM 1

Does not bounce and you hardly know it's there. Mate of mine runs with the Aonije vests and swears by them - he's even ditched his Salomon pack in favour of it. So if it was me, I'd go for the 10l pack, given that it's the same version as the one my mate uses. I mean we had a quick run the other day of under 2h and he used his 10l pack, I used my 12l pack, both with just one water bottle, cell phone and keys - and we dropped our lights in there as well when it became light enough. But it's not bulky, so if you want one pack, go for the large one. Just... go for a vest, not a "backpack" like the camelbak's from mtb-style. Pulse and Jackes 2
Chris_ Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 My wife went from the old Camelbak to Ultimate Direction - changed her life, she loves it (despite being admittedly very attached to the old one). I have an old Salomon too, equally love it.
Jackes Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 So if it was me, I'd go for the 10l pack, given that it's the same version as the one my mate uses This is what I was thinking, thanks for the info!
Pieter-za Posted June 23, 2019 Posted June 23, 2019 (edited) they have never heard of comradsDepends on who you ask (I think especially the 'who's who' in the world of ultra running is well aware of the Comrades.) https://www.letsrun.com/news/2019/05/q-a-with-sage-canaday-one-week-out-from-comrades-a-race-an-american-man-hasnt-won-in-25-years/ 'LRC: How are you feeling heading into the race? Nine weeks ago, you ran the Rotterdam Marathon. You ran 2:23 there but you’ve had nine weeks to get fitter. Since then, how’s the training been going? How do you feel feeling heading into what we call the world’s oldest, largest, and richest ultramarathon?' Sage: I say it’s also the most competitive hands down ultramarathon in the world.' b-rad Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Question on Karkloof 50 Miler. I am tentatively looking at Karkloof 50 Miler a its a race I've been wanting to do for a while and is a home race. Comrades went okay too so I've got that base already.I've only dabbled in the odd trail run but have been sticking to the road generally. Karkloof is on 21 September, but the race I've already got an entry for is New York Marathon taking place 6 weeks later on 3 November. My training over the next few months will be geared towards running a solid time at New York. My question is whether you think running Karkloof will be detrimental to my Ney York goals? I'm inclined to think it will be. If I were to run Karkloof I'd probably end up running fairly hard so it wouldn't be anywhere near a very long relatively easy effort.
dave303e Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Run Karkloof, if you not feeling it on the day you can pull out at 10km intervals along the way. It is not a super tech race and the whole route is definitely runnable so it will help your training. Little bit of speed work and some tapering from there and you should smash NY.

I'm in the other camp, I don't think KK50 will help you. Although I don't know your running history. If NY is the goal, why would you run another comrades 6 weeks before. You have the fitness from Comrades, now its about maintaining fitness and getting sharp. I admittedly do have a very goal focused approach and believe in the going for everything approach.
