Jewbacca Posted May 16, 2020 Share Stupid question: Do “race shoes” really make a difference to time?Asking for a friend [emoji16]That depends on you. When I ran fast and was pushing a sub3 marathon, I used the same shoes I trained in. I tried a pair of 'race shoes' and they felt amazing for 7km then I missed my tried and trusties. I always feel for those not running to win, comfort will make you faster as it's less to worry about/niggle you while you go. I always get to a point (or a few points depending on the length of the run) after a while when everything becomes annoying. The hat suddenly doesn't sit right, my ear is always itchy, my one lace is too long etc... None of those are actually an issue, but it's usually an indicator that I need to drink/eat or get ready to push through a low patch. I see it as a warning that my body sends me. I found that the race shoes became uncomfortable and it shifted my focus away from being comfortable. If you're a super goat racing snake then yes, but if you're not smashing fast km at optimum weight, then no. My guess would be it's a mental thing that could either work for you or not. In my case it didn't. Frosty
Roguemeister Posted May 16, 2020 Share Hi folks.I need a shoe recommendation please. My two favourite shoes are the Nike Vaporfly 4% and the Nike Zoomfly flyknit. The Vaporfly's were bought first but the soles perished quite quickly so I bought the Zoomfly as they had a slightly tougher sole. Both of these shoes are discontinued and the replacements are really difficult to find. Can anyone offer me some good advice on an alternative pair of shoes? If you know your size just order the zoom fly 3s off of the Nike sa website, maybe now in corona they'll take a little bit longer but I got mine within 7 days and they shipped from Amsterdam. shaper Posted May 16, 2020 Share Stupid question: Do “race shoes” really make a difference to time?Asking for a friend [emoji16]Yes they do, if you want to race fast then run in race specific shoes and train in shoes that give you more comfort and cushioning for your longer slower training distances. Frosty Posted May 16, 2020 Share Thanks for the feedback on race shoes. While it was a serious question, I don’t take my running that serious to warrant having a dedicated pair of race shoes. I’m a sub-2 half marathon runner (on a flat course), keeping to my comfortable NB 860s, which have given me 1120Km (v7) and 471Km (v9), should be adequate for my “fun run” needs. SeaBee Posted May 16, 2020 Share For anything longer than a half, comfort over "race shoe" wins for me. Not that I run a lot of road (comparatively) nowadays.
Trance Dance Posted May 16, 2020 Share After many years of trail running this lockdown is slowly turning me into a roadie. Bought my very first pair of road shoes today. I realised that my trail shoes were wearing down way too fast on the tar and who knows, maybe I'll keep doing the odd road run after all this is over. Christie Posted May 16, 2020 Share Hi folks.I need a shoe recommendation please. My two favourite shoes are the Nike Vaporfly 4% and the Nike Zoomfly flyknit. Pegasus Turbo 2 is well worth a look. It has the same ZoomX foam in the sole as the Next%.Otherwise, wait a few months for the Alphafly to arrive - I expect it to be expensive.

Not ideal as they're low mileage race shoes. Zoomfly Flyknit also not really a good high mileage trainer either. The Pegasus 37 is out and has more cushioning and different foam to the previous iterations. Might be a good option for day to day running? Pegasus Turbo also a good bet but wears quicker than the standard Pegasus in my experience. https://youtu.be/58pzdUdnBeM
Mudsimus Posted May 16, 2020 Share I get a good 600/700km out of Zoom Flys, so I do use them for certain training runs. But currently my go to trainers are Pegasus 35 and Epic React. Would probably get the Pegasus 36 as soon as mine needs replacing, but the Pegasus range just seems to last forever. Im also really impressed with the Nike React range. Lighter than the Zoom Fly, but without the carbon plate. Such an easy flowing shoe.

Wayne Potgieter Posted May 16, 2020 Share Thanks folks. Getting Nike’s in Nz is a challenge at the moment. There are two options. Go to a Nike store, these are generally operated by casual workers at school and the level of running specific advice is terrible as they are not experienced. Or online from Nike head office. This can take 3-4 weeks with shipping delays. We are very far away and our borders are closed so not a lot of flights to carry freight. Yesterday I went to a running speciality store and tried on a whole heap of different shoes while chatting to the owner. After about 9 different pairs, I settled on the New Balance 1080v10. The store has a 30 day return policy so if it’s horrible I can return them. Will do a 15 km break in run today to test them out. Mudsimus Posted May 17, 2020 Share first run not too good. Lots of hotspots and they felt pretty heavy. I miss my nikes.Im not a fan of 1080s. They are heavy and incredibly stiff. The Zoomfly is also stiff but the cushioning is so good that you dont get any discomfort or hotspots.
Jewbacca Posted May 17, 2020 Share I can't run in NB. I tried as the factory shop is just up the road and I am sample size! I miss the nike free knit shoes. They were hands down the best road shoes I ever had. Ugly as all vrot bananas but they did the job for me

I bought one of those proper lace up boys today.Do you train in stability shoes. I am a serial over pronator and used to roll my ankles often. But after starting using Asics Gt 2000 about 15 years back i dont have issues anymore. When its time to replace shoes i just walk into any store and get that years model. I dont bother looking at other shoes anymore. Duane_Bosch
