My weight was out of control, and additionally I've been struggling with a running injury for 6 months that did not want to heal.

I've been reading up on extended fasts for more than a year. The opportunity presented itself as there is no races/goals in my near future, thus I decided to jump in and do it now.

There doesn't ever seem to be a perfect time ... sometimes you just have to "white-knuckle" it, and do it.  :)

Well you certainly achieved your weight loss goal, thats a huge drop. Well done

I have to ask. That can’t be good for you? What about proteïnes and carbs and minerals and vitamins etc?

What happens to the body when you deprive it of that?

I guess it eats itself, definitely losing some muscle as well when you do that.

To those interested I can recommend looking at the 'Fasting mimicking diet' of Dr Valter Longo. I have done this a few times and it's not as tough as you might imagine, while providing essentially all the benefits of a strict fast. And it seems from preliminary research as if there might be loads of benefits.

I'm not sure if it's been said, but surely there is merit in just eating well, exercising consistently and not boozing/binging on s**t?

Caloric deficit if you want to lose weight.

Small deficit, consistency and a sustainable lifestyle. All these fad shock diets don't work, otherwise the water and grape guy would be a toothpick if he didn't put the weight he loses back on every time.

True, but on page 1 there was mention of autophagy and that seems to be marginal gains territory. So I am subscribed! ????

You are correct, and especially if you do a pure water fast like I did, as said before I only drank water, and took 3 electrolytes potassium and magnesium which is critical for heart and brain function, and salt for cell function.

If you want autophagy to kick in then you can't take other supplements, and as one of my main goals was healing, and removal of scar tissue and toxins from the body - I had to allow the body to source proteins from itself, eating itself by using up all scar tissue (eg. autophagy).

Sadly you do lose some muscle too, but at a much smaller rate than fat, as your body goes into ketosis.

There is 2 great books to read on this:

The Complete guide to Fasting

The Obesity Code

Think  both by Dr Jason Fung

If you want a quick video on what water fasting is:

I wouldn't have done a 21-day fast for weight-loss only, there is much easier ways of achieving that.

I follow an intermittent fasting regime. I've lost 20kg from Jan 1 to April 29 2020. This was coupled with training 6 days a week. 3 light intensity days,3 high intensity.

I plateaued around then but I've gained a couple kg in muscle mass now. I can say the regime works. It's scientifically proven to mitigate the onset of type 2 diabetes and can address the other risk factors that come with T2DM.

I recommend this to anyone trying to lose weight or anyone trying to improve metabolic functioning.

surely type 2 diabetes is caused by eating rubbish? Hence the onset can be mitigated by eating properly
