Did the 44km today. Geez, a proper mtb race. Some tough climbs. Managed 3 hours on the dot. 10th spot in Batch C. Very good turnout which i did not expect.

That was bloody tough! The heat didn't help either. Congrats on your result.

Did the race yesterday. 6/10. Highly priced. Allot of farm roads. Single track I already know as part of my club trails. Hurry up and wait vibes in the single track sections itself. Despite my grievances,it was well marshalled. The waterpoints were on point and I loved the vibe with many new faces enjoying the trails I enjoy daily. Could have been more shade by the end reception area. It was a scorcher.

I ride them trails all the time..This 45km felt incredibly tough, but perhaps I just had an off-day.

The entry fee really was over the top for what one got...or didn't get.

And every time I do one of these races I am astounded at the lack of skill of people when things go into the negative gradient. People must be going through brake pads at a hell of a rate :P Even the super tame decent into Hillcrest from the top of Contermans peeps were on their brakes constantly.

And why they put us on the top section of the blue at Contermans and then proceeded to cut out the bottom section in favour of more dirt road I don't know.

But alas I need to get used to racing and being tuck behind people as W2W is coming up later :)

any other guys keen to share? The entry fee put off a lot of people - me included.Particularly since those trails are open anyway.

I ride those trails a lot and I enjoyed it to do them in a race, a bit more stress. The USN water points were great and I have enough Gels for a while now, that last 10km was brutal, I saw one or two falls but overall it was ok. Was my first race on my new bike. You will never be able to ride the cement road, Nitida to Aurora and what I think was kliprug or part of it.

I guess why certain events are successful and others not will always be a bit of a mystery...

Take the Philadelphia race next week, sandy, bumpy, dusty, a bit boring with very little singletrack yet hugely popular

To be fair to the 99er, there are very few events are there that use trails that aren't open to the public. Even something like Wines2Whales are mostly on trails that are open to public.

I would imagine the vibe, water tables, timing, element of competition make people enter events like this at almost the price of an annual membership. Also I think a lot of the entrants aren't "locals" who are interested in riding the trails regularly or on their own.
