Alternative to rim rim tape

I am currently using some industrial chevron tape, cut to a suitable width. You often see this used in shopping centers to tape cables to the floor when they are doing a promotion or something in the passage and they need to run a extension cord for power. It is very tough and durable (it needs to be if people are going to be stepping on it all day long) and doesn't leave a sticky residue.

Looks like this:

if you cut is exactly in half its 24mm and fits tightly in the rim

my "conversion" is done the same as this except for the gorilla tape which is impossible to find.

Gorilla tape can be found at Outdoor Warehouse.

Best thing is, they are open n sundays and later on a saturday. So its usefull when your LBS is closed.

I use the normal wide duct tape. Tear/cut in half and fits perfectly into my Stans Crest and WTB KOM rims. One layer with it overlapping over the valve hole.

This setup has lasted me a very long time on my rigid ss, on which I also did Lesotho Sky, with no hassles.

Although, for piece of mind, Gorilla tape is moer nice (and also moer expensive for a student).

a different question to all the Pros here, can a normal tire be converted to Tubeless? Thank you in advance, I have Schwalbe Tough toms

It can be converted but the sidewalls aren't as strong as a proper tubeless tyre. I used a schwalbe rapid rob but it only lasted a couple of rides before i got a nasty sidewall cut.

Since i've put on lust maxxis tyres havent had any problems.

In short: No

The major factor is the type of bead on the tyre,

Then you have how porous the tyre is, this determines the amount and number of times you have to put sealant in the tyre in order to get it to seal properly.

Most times its not worth the effort.

Gorilla Tape is a very good substitute.

Gorilla Tape IS rim tape IS proper Duct Tape. The residue is not hard to remove if there is any.

1 Roll is enough for 3 27.5 rims...not sure it'll make 4...which kinda sucks :P

Man Gorilla tape is easy to find...

Bought from Evo the other day....but yes good quality duct tape is just as good and well under half the price.

put one layer insulation tape and then one layer gorilla tape

I buy Gorilla tape from Super Spar. They always have stock

with no doubt GORRILLLAAAA tape, used duct tape and other "alternatives" before, and there is simply no comparison. Besides using the 25mm roll on your rims, the tape is so awesome you will find many applications for this tape around the bike or house. It ROCKS.

I paid R70 at builders for a roll.

Yes.

Never owned a proper "tubeless" tyre in my life. Have used Maxxis, Kendas and Bontragers so far. Some might be bit harder to inflate than others but it can be done. If you have problems getting them to pop remove the valve core and pump them up like that to let the bead seat. Then quickly install the valve core. A nice soapy mix made with Sunlight helps. Wet your fingers and run them around between the rim and tyre before you start.
