If a lion was chasing you then you'd get further on a 29er than a 26er before you were caught and eaten.........same trail, same rider, same level of motivation

hogwash.

if you've got say a R15k budget, then your best bang for buck is a decent second hand 26er. Because guys on the 29 bandwagon are offloading awesome bikes that just sit in their garages.

plus it will spin up quicker, so the lion will probably chow you whilst you're getting wagon wheels up to speed.

you are assuming the lion is charging from the rear .... now if the lion is coming from the front or the side, you will be able to "side step" and avoid the lion far easier with a nimble 26'er vs a lumbering 29'er ..... so let's assume a 10deg angle of charge from the rear as being 29'er survival angle .... that means on a 26'er you have 350deg survival angle .... I know which odds I would choose.

Assume the lion is a metaphor for overpowering motivation so that your personal bias does not affect the amount of effort you put into pedalling the two bikes in this test .

So ignore the charge angle and other side issues.

- Yes wagon wheels theoretically accelerate slower with the same drivetrain but drivetrains have evolved to suit....36t, 40t and 42t cassettes were uncommon in the 26er heyday, as were the wide choice of 2x and 1x chainrings.

-Yes wagonwheels are slower in tight twisties but roll over obstacles more smoothly.

I've had high-end examples of both and would never go back to 26er even if still available.

Start to Finish over a course containing a typical mix of trail conditions, dirt road, twisties, rocks, singletrack, hills and descents the 29er rider will edge out a 26er rider of similar fitness and skill. Race results all over the world tell us this is so with few exceptions.....

You would be able to ride over the Lion with a 29er  :whistling:

BUT

If you are at a standing start with your 100% identically cloned sibling, and you are at a standing start when the lion set's off ... even from the rear 10deg angle that benefits your 29'er, your clone will accelerate faster off the mark leaving you as the "prey" to be caught ..... :P

Can we please post stuff here that is relevant to the thread

AND NOT let this turm into another FUC#ING 29er vs. 26er debate

+ the shame brought on the family by being caught dead on a 29er...
