Online Racing - Virtualtraining (Zwift)

Confession time...

I'm a Zwift addict.

I ride at least 5 times a week. I do mainly the workouts. They've made a real difference to my fitness and power on the road.

Last Saturday at Cycle Lab, I rode 100 miles solo to raise money for Qhubeka.

Last night I raced in the WBR 3 lapper. I don't know who that guys was from Sweden, but I was determined to beat him. A proper hard workout from start to finish.

As I say, addictive!!

Took the plunge and did my first ride on Zwift.

only have 1 map to ride?

but also struggling with power under reading badly.

the wahoo Kickr 2 linked to my garmin 520 reads 200W - this feels right for the effort

NB i have been riding with power for years

however, in Zwift it is only showing 160W - thats 40W just missing.

a little depressing.

i've tried calibrating the kickr is the wahoo app after warming the unit up.

this has not helped.

anyone got any ideas?

would really like to see realistic figures in Zwift

Sounds like your power meter isn't connected to Swift, and its using your speed and cadence and zpower curve to approximate. You got an ant+ dongle in your zwift PC?

Definitely one isnt connected to the other, or your gamin is connected to another pm...stages maybe or p1?

Try to connect via ant+ FEC and maybe get an USB extension cable.

Also remember there are separate options for "controllable trainer" and "power measurement". ie you can use the controllable trainer and still always read from your "normal" PM for consistency. So make sure you are reading from the same PM.

right, so this am i did my second ride.

this time i calibrated my Powertap P1 pedals to my Garmin Fenix 5.

and then calibrated the Wahoo to my Garmin 520 and Zwift - did the 10min warm up followed by a spin down.

the Garmin and Zwift were perfectly in sync (recieving data from the Wahoo Kickr).

However they were a whopping 20% out compared to my P1 pedals.

i'm 100% certain my P1 pedals are accurate.

i have a powertap on my hardtail mtb and a SRM crank on the dual-sus and those both correlate well to my P1 pedals.

think i have a bum Kickr?

this is exactly what i ended up doing.

so power in Zwift is being read from my pedals

still would like to know why the Kickr is so far out though...

Ok so if I understand correctly, your Kickr compared to your Pedals is low. Alot low. Try the below - very easy from your side.

  1. Make sure you have the latest firmware.
  2. Clean the optical sensor and the black/white sticker (This was sometimes a problem on the original one).

If you're still having issues, get in touch with the agents, they're really helpful.

yeah see the pic above of the 2 different figures.

so far i have updated the firmware and still have the issue

will get in contact with Wahoo and see if they can help

Thanks for the assistance!

As for Zwift - i see myself getting addicted to it

road an hour this am and had to force myself to get off - quite the opposite from a normal Indoor session!

Try giving the optical speed sensor a clean. If it's not working properly then it can't calculate the power correctly.

Kickr basically measures the acceleration and deceleration of the flywheel to determine power. They used to have a strain gauge in the Kickr1 but it was disabled by one of the recent firmware releases.

it shouldn't be an issue, the unit is brand brand new, got it Friday.

i dont want to go fiddling and voiding warranty.

i have contacted the LBS and will see what they have to say

Anyone had Bluetooth issues? Connecting the android app to my Tacx to calibrate is a total mystery - have to open and close and switch off and on and reboot until eventually it magically connects...

Need to do the everest challenge i.e climb 8800m in total. Heeha!

It's a little more difficult than that. You first need to complete the Everest Challenge as mentioned but then you need to keep going until you hit 50,000m of climbing to unlock the Tron bike.
